🔧 550i - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your 550i’s front turn signal may be a traditional replaceable bulb or an integrated LED unit depending on the headlight option. The access is typically from the rear of the headlight through the wheel-well liner area.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

Assumption: I’m covering both bulb-style and LED-style setups.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let headlights cool completely before touching anything.
  • ⚠️ Support the car on jack stands if you lift it; never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Avoid touching a new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Keep keys away from the car so lights can’t turn on unexpectedly.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 17mm socket
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench (20-200 Nm range)
  • Torx T20 bit
  • Torx T25 bit
  • 8mm socket
  • Ratchet (3/8" drive)
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flat trim pry tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Headlight rear access cap seal (if damaged) - Qty: 1
  • Fender liner clips/screws (assortment) - Qty: 1
  • Front turn signal LED module (if equipped) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the steering wheel fully away from the side you’re working on (gives more room).
  • Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
  • If you’ll remove the wheel, slightly loosen the lug bolts first using a 17mm socket and breaker bar.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Gain access through the wheel well

  • If you want maximum space, lift the front corner using a floor jack, place a jack stand under a safe support point, and set wheel chocks on the opposite wheels.
  • Optional: Remove the wheel using a 17mm socket.
  • Remove or loosen the front portion of the fender liner (wheel-well liner) using Torx T20 bit, Torx T25 bit, and an 8mm socket.
  • Pop plastic clips with a trim clip removal tool. (This tool is a fork-shaped pry tool that lifts clips without breaking them.)

Step 2: Locate the turn signal access on the back of the headlight

  • Use a flashlight and look behind the headlight housing from the wheel-well opening.
  • Find the rear access cover/cap and remove it by hand; if tight, gently help with a flat trim pry tool.
  • Tip: Keep screws/clips in one small container.

Step 3A: If your 550i has a replaceable turn signal bulb

  • Identify the turn signal bulb holder/socket (it typically twists to unlock).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
  • Remove the bulb from the holder (most pull straight out; some are a slight twist).
  • Install the new amber bulb while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Reinstall the bulb holder and twist clockwise until fully locked.

Step 3B: If your 550i has an integrated LED front turn signal

  • If you do not see a removable bulb and instead see an LED module/connector, the turn signal is LED-style.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight back.
  • If the LED module is serviceable on your headlight, remove its fasteners using a Torx T20 bit and swap the module.
  • If there is no separate removable module, the turn signal is not bulb-serviceable and the repair may require headlight repair/replacement.

Step 4: Reassemble the wheel-well liner and wheel

  • Reinstall the headlight access cap. Make sure it seals evenly all the way around.
  • Reposition the fender liner and reinstall screws/clips using Torx T20 bit, Torx T25 bit, and 8mm socket (snug only—don’t strip plastic).
  • If you removed the wheel, install the lug bolts by hand first, then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Test the turn signal and hazards on both sides.
  • Check for a fast-blink (can indicate the bulb isn’t seated or the wrong bulb type).
  • Make sure the headlight rear cap is fully installed to prevent moisture inside the headlight.
