🔧 Traverse - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Traverse, the “front turn signal” may be a replaceable amber bulb or it may be an LED built into the headlamp (no bulb to change). We’ll start by checking which type you have, then replace the bulb if it’s serviceable.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlamp area cool; bulbs/housings can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch a new glass bulb with bare fingers (skin oil shortens bulb life).
  • ⚠️ If you must raise the front, support with jack stands before reaching into wheel-well areas.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 7mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber, vehicle-matched) - Qty: 1
  • Front turn signal bulb (amber, vehicle-matched) - Qty: 1 Replace in pairs

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the steering wheel away from the side you’re working on (gives more room).
  • If you plan to access through the wheel-well, raise that front corner with a floor jack and support it with jack stands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm whether your Traverse has a replaceable bulb

  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp housing.
  • Look for a round dust cap or a twist-in bulb socket with wires going to it.
  • If you see a twist socket you can grab by hand, you likely have a serviceable bulb.
  • If you do not see any bulb socket access and the turn signal appears to be part of an LED strip/projector assembly, it may be LED (no bulb). In that case, the fix is typically a headlamp/LED module repair, not a bulb swap.

Step 2: Create access (only if needed)

  • If access is tight, remove any small covers/ducting near the back of the headlamp using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet (set bolts aside in a safe spot).
  • If the bulb access is through the wheel-well, remove the front section of the liner fasteners using a 7mm socket and a trim clip removal tool.
  • Tip: Keep clips grouped by location.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Reach the rear of the turn signal area and grasp the bulb socket.
  • Rotate the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s stuck, wiggle gently—don’t pry on the plastic with force.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Install the new amber bulb into the socket (push straight in until fully seated).
  • Tip: Don’t touch glass with bare skin.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and rotate clockwise to lock.
  • Turn the ignition on and test the turn signal and hazards.
  • If it flashes fast, the bulb may be wrong type, not seated, or you may have an LED system fault.

Step 6: Reassemble

  • Reinstall any covers/ducting using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Reinstall wheel-well liner fasteners using a 7mm socket and trim clip removal tool.
  • If raised, lower the vehicle safely from jack stands using the floor jack.

✅ After Repair

  • Confirm left and right turn signals work from inside and outside the vehicle.
  • Confirm hazards work and the cluster indicator flashes at a normal speed.
  • If you still have a warning message or rapid flash, the issue may be LED-module related or a wiring/socket problem.

Quick check (so I can be 100% accurate): When you look behind the headlamp, do you see a twist-out bulb socket for the front turn signal, or does it look like a sealed LED headlamp with no bulb access?
