How to Replace the Front Turn Signal Bulb on a 2020 Mazda CX-5
Step-by-step instructions, tools and parts list, safety tips, and LED vs bulb troubleshooting

🔧 CX-5 - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your CX-5, the front turn signals are serviced from the back side of the headlight housing. If your CX-5 has a replaceable bulb, you’ll twist out the bulb socket and swap the bulb; if it has LED turn signals, there is no bulb to replace and the repair changes.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.6 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool if you were driving (hot plastic/metal nearby).
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil shortens bulb life).
- ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio presets.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight
- Trim clip removal tool
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front turn signal bulb (amber, vehicle-matched) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the steering wheel slightly away from the side you’re working on to open up space near the headlight (helps hand access).
- If your CX-5 has LED front turn signals (no bulb socket), stop here and tell me that—your repair path is different.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the correct front turn signal is out
- Turn the hazard lights on and walk around the CX-5 to confirm which front side is out.
- Use a flashlight to look through the lens—if you can see an amber bulb inside, it’s typically replaceable.
Step 2: Open the hood and locate the turn signal socket
- Open the hood and stand behind the headlight on the side you’re replacing.
- Use a flashlight to find the bulb socket on the back of the headlight housing (a round socket with wiring going to it).
- Space is tighter on one side—be patient.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket from the headlight
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/8–1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
- If access is blocked by a plastic cover/duct, use a trim clip removal tool (a forked pry tool that pops plastic fasteners) and/or a small flat-blade screwdriver to release the plastic clips carefully.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Remove the old bulb from the socket (most pull straight out).
- Install the new front turn signal bulb (amber, vehicle-matched) fully into the socket.
- Do not touch the bulb glass with bare fingers—use your nitrile gloves.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the headlight housing and rotate clockwise until it locks.
- Turn on the hazard lights to confirm the new bulb flashes normally.
- If you removed any plastic clips/covers, reinstall them by hand (push clips in until fully seated).
Step 6: If it still doesn’t work
- Remove the socket again and make sure the bulb is fully seated.
- Check the socket for corrosion or heat damage using a flashlight.
- If the turn signal is LED (no removable bulb) or the socket/wiring is damaged, the fix may require a headlamp/LED component repair.
âś… After Repair
- Verify left and right turn signals and hazards flash at a normal speed.
- Check that the bulb is secure and the socket is fully locked (no moisture gaps).
- If it “hyperflashes” (very fast blinking), the circuit still sees a fault—tell me which side and what you observe.
