🔧 Traverse - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Traverse, the front turn signal may be a replaceable amber bulb, or it may be an LED that’s built into the headlamp assembly. The access method (and what parts you can replace) depends on which headlamp style you have.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the headlamp cool before touching it.
  • ⚠️ Support the SUV with jack stands if you raise it; never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If your turn signal is an LED built into the headlamp, the “bulb” may not be serviceable separately.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (match the bulb number from the old bulb) - Qty: 1
  • Wheel liner push clips - Qty: 2-6

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Turn the steering wheel away from the side you’re working on to create more space in the wheel well.
  • If access is too tight, lift that front corner with a floor jack and support it with jack stands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which headlamp style you have

  • Turn the hazard lights on and look at the front turn signal.
  • If you see a distinct amber “bulb” turning on/off inside the headlamp, you likely have a replaceable bulb.
  • If the turn signal is an LED bar/strip or a crisp “pixel-like” LED source with no bulb look, it may be an LED unit that is not bulb-serviceable.
  • If you can, snap a photo of the headlamp.

Step 2: Open wheel-well access (most common method)

  • Turn the wheel to give you room behind the front tire.
  • Use a flashlight to find the rear of the headlamp housing through the wheel liner opening.
  • Remove the wheel liner fasteners in the front portion of the liner using a trim clip removal tool and small flat-blade screwdriver.
  • If equipped with small screws, remove them using a 7mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Peel the liner back just enough to reach the bulb socket—don’t crease it hard.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the headlamp (it will have a wiring connector going into it).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand until it unlocks, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s tight, use nitrile gloves for grip—avoid using pliers (easy to crack the socket).

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If it’s a halogen bulb, wear nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the glass.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the headlamp.
  • Twist clockwise by hand until it locks fully.
  • Turn the hazards on and verify the new bulb flashes normally.
  • If it “hyper-flashes” (very fast), the bulb may be the wrong type or there may be an electrical issue.

Step 6: Reinstall the wheel liner

  • Reposition the liner.
  • Reinstall push clips using the trim clip removal tool and small flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Reinstall any screws using the 7mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) for small wheel-liner screws (hand-snug; do not strip plastic).

Step 7: If your Traverse has LED turn signals (no replaceable bulb)

  • If you cannot find a twist-out bulb socket, the turn signal is likely LED-integrated.
  • In that case, repair is typically replacement of the headlamp assembly or LED module (depending on configuration).
  • Stop here and tell me whether your turn signal is an LED strip and which side (driver or passenger); I’ll give the correct service path for your Traverse.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify left and right turn signals, hazards, and parking lights all work.
  • Confirm the message center shows no lighting warnings.
  • At night, confirm the bulb is seated correctly and aimed the same as the other side (no weird glare inside the housing).

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $90-$180 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $80-$145 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
