🔧 Tiguan - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your Tiguan, the front turn signal is either a replaceable bulb inside the headlight (halogen headlight) or an LED module that isn’t a normal “bulb” (LED headlight). I’ll show the bulb-replacement procedure, and I’ll also tell you what to do if yours is LED.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the headlight cool before touching it.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch a new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Keep keys out of the ignition so lights don’t auto-turn on.
- âś… Battery disconnect is not required for a simple bulb swap.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the steering wheel slightly away from the side you’re working on (gives your hands more room).
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind the headlight.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which headlight style you have
- Use a flashlight and look at the headlight lens.
- If you see a normal reflector/bulb style headlight, you likely have a replaceable turn-signal bulb.
- If the turn signal is a crisp LED “strip” and there’s no removable bulb access at the rear, it may be an LED module (not a serviceable bulb).
Step 2: Access the rear of the headlight (bulb-type headlights)
- Open the hood and locate the rear of the headlight on the side you’re replacing.
- If an intake snorkel/cover blocks your hand, use a trim clip tool to pop up any push-clips and move the duct slightly for access.
- Use a flashlight to identify the turn-signal bulb holder (it’s a twist-lock socket going into the headlight housing).
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb holder
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Grip the bulb holder and rotate it counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
- If it’s tight, use a small flathead screwdriver gently to help you start the rotation. Don’t pry on the housing.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the holder (most are a push-in style).
- Install the new bulb by pushing it fully into the holder.
- Do not touch the glass of the new bulb; keep nitrile gloves on.
Step 5: Reinstall the bulb holder
- Insert the holder back into the headlight in the same orientation.
- Twist clockwise by hand until it stops and feels snug.
- Torque to 0 Nm (hand-tight only)
Step 6: Refit any ducts/covers you moved
- Reposition the intake duct/cover.
- Press push-clips back in by hand or with the trim clip tool.
Step 7: If your Tiguan has LED turn signals (no bulb holder)
- If there is no twist-out bulb socket at the rear of the headlight, the turn signal is likely LED and not a replaceable bulb.
- In that case, the fix is typically replacing the LED module or the headlight assembly (varies by headlight design).
- Use a flashlight to find any small LED module with screws on the rear—if present, it may be replaceable as a unit.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition on and test left and right turn signals.
- Verify the turn signal blinks at a normal speed (fast blinking can mean a bulb isn’t working).
- Make sure the bulb holder area is fully seated so moisture can’t enter the headlight.
