How to Replace the Front Turn Signal Bulb on a 2018 Nissan Maxima (Wheel-Well Access)
Step-by-step instructions with required tools/parts, safety tips, LED vs bulb verification, and lug nut torque specs

š§ Maxima - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your Maxima, the front turn signal may be a replaceable bulb (serviceable from the wheel-well), or it may be an LED thatās built into the headlamp and not a simple bulb swap. Iāll walk you through the bulb-replaceable method and also how to verify if yours is LED.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- š Support the car with jack stands before working near the wheel well.
- 𧤠Let the headlamp area cool if you were just driving.
- ā” Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the car while working.
- š§¼ Donāt touch a halogen bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).

š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front turn signal bulb (amber, correct fitment for your Maxima) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Fender liner push clips (assortment) - Qty: 1
š Before You Begin
- š æļø Park on level ground, shift to Park, and apply the parking brake.
- š§± Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- š Quick check: look at the headlamp when the turn signal is on. If the amber light looks like a āstripā or multiple LED points (not a single bulb), it may be an LED unit (not bulb-serviceable).
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm itās a replaceable bulb
- Turn the hazard lights on briefly, then turn them off.
- Use a work light and look into the headlamp: if you can see a round plastic bulb socket behind the turn signal area, itās usually bulb-serviceable.
- If it appears to be an LED module with no removable socket, skip to Step 10.
Step 2: Loosen the front wheel lug nuts (same side as the bulb)
- Use a 21mm socket with a 1/2" drive ratchet to crack the lug nuts loose 1/4 turn while the tire is still on the ground.
Step 3: Raise and support the front corner
- Lift the front corner with a floor jack at the correct jacking point.
- Set the car securely on jack stands before you put your hands into the wheel well.
Step 4: Remove the front wheel
- Remove the lug nuts using the 21mm socket and 1/2" drive ratchet.
- Pull the wheel straight off and set it aside.
Step 5: Open the front fender liner access
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic push clips at the front of the fender liner.
- If equipped with screws, remove them using a Phillips screwdriver or 10mm socket.
- Gently peel the liner back enough to reach behind the headlamp. Donāt force itāclips break easily.
Step 6: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Reach behind the headlamp and find the turn signal socket (itās a round plastic socket that twists out).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
Step 7: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
- If the bulb is a āwedge baseā style, it just pulls out/pushes in (no twisting).
Step 8: Reinstall the bulb socket and check operation
- Reinstall the socket into the headlamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Turn the hazards on to verify the new bulb flashes normally.
- If it āhyper-flashesā (very fast), the bulb may be the wrong type or thereās a wiring issue on that corner.
Step 9: Reassemble and torque the wheel
- Reposition the fender liner and reinstall clips using the trim clip removal tool (and screws using the Phillips screwdriver or 10mm socket).
- Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread the lug nuts.
- Lower the car, then torque lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench: Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).
Step 10: If your Maxima has LED front turn signals (no replaceable bulb)
- If there is no removable bulb socket, the turn signal is part of the headlamp assembly (or LED module) and isnāt serviced as a simple bulb.
- The next step is diagnosis: check fuses and connector condition, and scan for lighting-related codes (some lighting faults set BCM codes).
- Tell me whether your turn signal still illuminates (but dim/flickers) or is completely out, and which side (left/right). Iāll guide the correct repair path.
ā After Repair
- š Verify left and right signals, hazards, and parking lights all work.
- š Listen for normal click speed (fast clicking usually means a bulb/load issue).
- š§© Make sure the fender liner is secured so it canāt rub the tire.
