🔧 Trax - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Trax, the front turn signal bulb is inside the headlamp assembly. The exact access method (from behind the headlamp vs. through the fender liner vs. removing the headlamp) depends on which headlamp option your Trax has and which side you’re working on.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the headlamp cool before touching bulbs.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of a new bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If you raise the vehicle, support it with jack stands before working near the wheel well.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim clip removal tool
  • Ratchet
  • Socket set (metric) (specialty)
  • Torx bit set (specialty)
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1
  • Fender liner push clips (optional) - Qty: 2-6

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the steering wheel fully away from the side you’re working on (gives more room at the liner).
  • Confirm the failed bulb by switching on hazards and walking around the Trax.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm the access path (quick check)

  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp for a turn-signal socket you can reach by hand.
  • If your hand cannot reach the socket safely, you’ll use the wheel-well liner access in Step 3.

Step 2: Try behind-the-headlamp access (if reachable)

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Reach behind the headlamp and find the turn signal bulb socket (it’s a twist-lock socket).
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket. Don’t touch the bulb glass.
  • Reinstall the socket into the headlamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Skip to Step 5 to test.

Step 3: Wheel-well liner access (most common when space is tight)

  • Place wheel chocks at the rear wheels.
  • Lift the front corner with a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) and support it with jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Use a plastic trim clip removal tool to remove the push clips along the front portion of the fender liner.
  • If screws are present, remove them using a ratchet with your socket set (metric) (specialty) or a Torx bit set (specialty) (fastener type varies by liner hardware).
  • Peel the liner back just enough to reach behind the headlamp.

Step 4: Remove and replace the bulb (liner access)

  • Use a flashlight to locate the turn signal socket on the back of the headlamp.
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise and pull it out.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket and push the new bulb in fully.
  • Reinstall the socket and twist clockwise until fully locked.

Step 5: Reassemble

  • Reposition the fender liner.
  • Reinstall all clips with a plastic trim clip removal tool (push them in straight) and reinstall any screws using the ratchet with the socket set (metric) (specialty) or the Torx bit set (specialty).
  • Remove the jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) and lower the Trax with the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).

✅ After Repair

  • Turn on the hazards and verify the repaired side flashes at normal speed.
  • Verify the turn signal works with the stalk in both left/right positions.
  • If it still hyper-flashes, recheck the bulb seating and the socket lock.
