How to Replace the Front Turn Signal Bulb on a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu
Step-by-step wheel-well access instructions, required tools/parts, safety tips, and bulb vs LED headlamp checks

🔧 Malibu - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your Malibu, the front turn signal is inside the headlamp assembly. Replacement access depends on which headlamp type you have because some versions use a replaceable bulb, while others use an LED module that isn’t serviced like a normal bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the headlamp area cool before touching anything.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch glass bulb with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you need to raise the front of the car, support it with jack stands before working near the wheel well.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Trim clip remover
- Flathead screwdriver
- 7mm socket
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 1/4" extension (3"-6")
- Flashlight
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front turn signal bulb - Qty: 1 (or Qty: 2 if replacing both sides)
- Plastic push clips (fender liner/undertray) - Qty: 2-6 (as needed)
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the steering wheel toward the side you’re working on (more room at the liner).
- If you choose the wheel-well access method, chock the rear wheels and raise the front safely with a floor jack and jack stands.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm your headlamp type (bulb vs LED)
- Turn on the hazard flashers and look at the front turn signal.
- If the amber light looks like a single “strip” or patterned LED and not a blinking bulb, it may be an LED module (not a simple bulb swap).
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp for a round twist socket going into the housing (this usually indicates a replaceable bulb).
Step 2: Access the turn signal socket (wheel-well method)
- Turn the wheel outward for more space, or raise the front using wheel chocks, a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), and jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Remove the front section of the fender liner fasteners using a trim clip remover and 7mm socket.
- Pull the liner back gently by hand to reach behind the headlamp. Don’t yank; clips break easily.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Reach to the rear of the headlamp and locate the turn signal socket (a round plastic holder).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand; if tight, use nitrile gloves for grip (avoid tools that can crack it).
- Pull the socket straight out of the housing.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a “push-in” style on most Malibu bulb sockets).
- Install the new front turn signal bulb fully into the socket.
- If it’s a glass bulb, wear nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the glass.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test
- Reinsert the socket into the headlamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Turn on the hazards to confirm it flashes normally.
- If it “hyper-flashes” (blinks fast), double-check the bulb is fully seated; if it still does it, the bulb type may be incorrect for your headlamp setup.
Step 6: Reinstall the fender liner
- Position the liner back in place.
- Reinstall screws with a 7mm socket and push clips with a trim clip remover (or press in by hand).
âś… After Repair
- Verify left and right turn signals and hazards work.
- Check that the fender liner is secured and not rubbing the tire.
- If you raised the car, remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and lower it carefully using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
