šŸ”§ GLC - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your front turn signals either use a replaceable amber bulb or an LED unit built into the headlamp. If it’s the bulb type, you can swap it from the wheel-well access panel without removing the bumper.

Assumption: This covers the replaceable-bulb headlamp; if your headlamp has an LED turn signal, the ā€œbulbā€ is not serviceable.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • šŸ›‘ Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves—bulbs and surrounding parts can be hot, and oils from skin can shorten bulb life.
  • šŸ‘“ Use safety glasses when working under the fender liner area.
  • šŸ”Œ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the steering wheel to full lock away from the side you’re working on (this opens up space in the wheel well).
  • Have your flashlight ready so you can clearly see the access door and bulb socket.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm whether your turn signal is a bulb or LED

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp area through the wheel-well access opening (next steps) for a twist-out bulb holder.
  • If you do not find a removable bulb holder and the headlamp is labeled/identified as LED with a sealed turn signal, the turn signal is not a bulb service item—repair typically requires headlamp/LED module service.

Step 2: Open the wheel-well access panel

  • Use a Torx T25 screwdriver to remove the screws holding the small access door in the front portion of the fender liner (wheel-well liner).
  • If there are plastic clips, use a trim clip removal tool to pop them out without tearing the liner.
  • Tip: Keep screws/clips in one cup.

Step 3: Remove the front turn signal bulb holder

  • Use a flashlight to identify the turn signal bulb holder (a round socket that twists out of the headlamp housing).
  • Grip the holder and twist it counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s stuck, use a small flat-blade screwdriver gently on the holder tabs to help start the rotation (do not pry on the headlamp housing).

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
  • Remove the old bulb from the holder (most pull straight out; some are a push-and-twist style).
  • Install the new amber bulb, matching the base style exactly to the old one.
  • Tip: Don’t touch the glass bulb surface.

Step 5: Reinstall the bulb holder and close the access panel

  • Insert the bulb holder back into the headlamp and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Reinstall the access door using the Torx T25 screwdriver and any clips using the trim clip removal tool.
  • Make sure the access door sits flush to keep water and dirt out.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition on and test the left/right turn signals and hazards.
  • If the turn signal ā€œhyper-flashesā€ (blinks fast), recheck that the bulb is the correct type and fully seated.
  • Verify the access panel is secure so moisture can’t enter the headlamp area.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$180 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $70-$140 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
