How to Replace the Front Turn Signal Bulb on a 2013-2018 Audi Q5 (Halogen vs LED)
Step-by-step instructions, required tools/parts, safety tips, and what to do if your Q5 has sealed LED headlights for 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018
š§ Q5 - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On many Q5 Prestige trims, the front turn signals are LEDs built into the headlight, so there is no replaceable ābulbā. If your Q5 has halogen headlights, the front turn signal is a serviceable bulb you can swap from the back of the headlight.
Difficulty Level: Beginner (halogen) / Advanced (LED headlight replacement) | Estimated Time: 15ā30 min (halogen) / Not DIY-friendly (LED)
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ā ļø Let the headlight area cool before touching anything.
- ā ļø Do not touch a new bulbās glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ā ļø If your Q5 has full LED headlights: do not open the headlight housing; itās sealed and typically replaced as an assembly.

š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front turn signal bulb (halogen-headlight cars only) - Qty: 1
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and have a flashlight ready so you can see the rear of the headlight.
- Two quick questions so I can give you the exact correct path:
- Is your front turn signal inside the headlight, or is it in the mirror?
- Do your headlights look like full LED (bright white, sharp ālight pipeā look) or halogen (yellowish reflector bulb)?
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm you have a replaceable bulb
- Use an LED flashlight to look at the front headlight lens.
- If you see an LED āstripā style turn signal with no obvious bulb reflector, itās usually not a bulb (LED headlight).
- If you see a traditional reflector area for the turn signal, you likely have a replaceable bulb (halogen headlight).
Step 2: Access the rear of the headlight (halogen only)
- Open the hood.
- Use an LED flashlight to locate the round or rectangular access cover on the back of the headlight.
- If thereās a locking tab, use a small flathead screwdriver gently. Donāt pry hardāplastic breaks easily.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb holder (halogen only)
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Twist the bulb holder counterclockwise by hand; if itās tight, use a plastic trim tool set to help nudge it (avoid metal tools on the housing).
- Pull the holder straight out.
Step 4: Replace the bulb (halogen only)
- Remove the old bulb from the holder (it may pull straight out or be a twist-lock depending on style).
- Install the new front turn signal bulb fully into the holder.
- If the bulb is amber-coated, handle it gently and donāt scrape the coating.
Step 5: Reinstall and test (halogen only)
- Reinsert the bulb holder into the headlight and twist clockwise until it seats.
- Reinstall the rear access cover (make sure it seals all the way to keep moisture out).
- Turn the ignition ON and test the turn signal and hazards.
Step 6: If you have full LED headlights (common on Prestige)
- If the front turn signal is LED, there is no bulb replacement procedureāit typically requires replacing the headlight assembly (or an internal LED/module, depending on exact headlight version).
- Reply with a photo of the headlight and tell me left or right side, and Iāll give you the correct, exact repair route (DIY vs best handled by a shop).
ā After Repair
- Verify the turn signal flashes at a normal speed (fast flashing usually means a bulb/LED fault on that side).
- Check the headlight for any moisture over the next dayāif you see fogging, the rear cover may not be sealed.
š° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $80-$180 (halogen bulb) / $1,200-$3,000+ (LED headlight replacement)
DIY Cost: $10-$40 (halogen bulb)
You Save: $70-$140 by doing it yourself (halogen bulb)!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.7 hours (halogen bulb).
