🔧 Tacoma - Front Lower Control Arm Replacement

Assumption: front lower control arms, both sides. This job involves removing the lower arm assembly, transferring hardware as needed, and then getting a wheel alignment right after the repair. Because the suspension holds the wheel in place, support the arm carefully and do not let the knuckle hang by the brake hose.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the truck securely on jack stands before removing any suspension bolts.
  • Keep hands clear when separating the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  • Do not let the wheel hub/knuckle hang by the brake hose or ABS wire.
  • Use a spring-safe approach: the front suspension is loaded and can move suddenly.
  • Wheel alignment is required after control arm replacement.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Break the front wheel lug nuts loose before lifting the truck.
  • Spray penetrating oil on all control arm fasteners and the ball joint nut.
  • Mark the cam bolt positions with a paint marker before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front end

  • Use a floor jack to raise the front of the truck at the proper lift point.
  • Place jack stands under the frame rails and lower the truck onto them.
  • Remove both front wheels with a 21mm socket.

Step 2: Disconnect the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle

  • Use a 19mm socket to remove the lower ball joint nut.
  • Use a ball joint separator (specialty) to break the taper free from the knuckle.
  • Do not hammer the stud threads.

Step 3: Support the knuckle

  • Use a small jack or stand under the lower control arm/knuckle area to keep the assembly from dropping.
  • Make sure the brake hose and ABS wire are not stretched.

Step 4: Remove the control arm pivot bolts

  • Use a 17mm socket and 19mm socket as needed to remove the front and rear control arm mounting bolts.
  • Remove the cam bolts carefully and keep track of their order.
  • Marking the bolt position helps the truck stay closer to alignment on reassembly.

Step 5: Remove the control arm

  • Lower the control arm out of the frame pocket and remove it from the vehicle.
  • If it is stuck, use a pry bar and a hammer lightly on the arm pocket area.

Step 6: Install the new control arm

  • Position the new control arm into the frame mounts.
  • Install the cam bolts and nuts by hand first.
  • Attach the lower ball joint to the knuckle and start the nut by hand.
  • Snug all fasteners, but do not final-tighten the pivot bolts yet.

Step 7: Reassemble and torque at ride height

  • Raise the control arm until the suspension is at normal ride height.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten all fasteners to Toyota factory specification.
  • Tighten the lower ball joint nut to Toyota factory specification.
  • Final torque at ride height prevents bushing preload.

Step 8: Reinstall wheels and lower the truck

  • Install the front wheels with a 21mm socket.
  • Lower the truck off the jack stands.
  • Torque the lug nuts to Toyota factory specification.

✅ After Repair

  • Test drive slowly and listen for clunks or pulling.
  • Check that the steering wheel is centered.
  • Schedule a professional wheel alignment right away.
  • Recheck all visible fasteners after the first drive.
