🔧 Sentra - Front Lower Control Arm Replacement

The front lower control arm holds the wheel in the correct position and carries the lower ball joint and bushings. If it is bent, has torn bushings, or a loose ball joint, the car can pull, clunk, or feel unstable.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface and support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Chock the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • The steering and suspension must not hang by the brake hose or axle shaft while the control arm is loose.
  • Use caution around the spring-loaded suspension components; they can move suddenly when hardware is removed.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before raising the car.
  • Lift the front and support both sides securely with jack stands.
  • If one control arm is worn, replace both front lower control arms at the same time.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the front of the car

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the car at the proper lift point.
  • Place jack stands under the front support points and lower the car onto them.
  • Remove both front wheels with a 19mm socket.

Step 2: Remove the splash shield or under cover if equipped

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the fasteners holding the lower splash shield.
  • Set the shield aside so you can access the control arm bolts.

Step 3: Separate the control arm from the knuckle

  • Use a 17mm socket or 18mm socket to remove the lower ball joint pinch or fastening hardware, depending on what is installed.
  • If the joint is stuck, use a ball joint separator (specialty) to break it free.
  • Do not hammer directly on the ball joint stud.

Step 4: Remove the rear control arm bolt

  • Use a 17mm socket or 18mm socket with a breaker bar to remove the rear bushing bolt.
  • If the bolt is tight, spray it with penetrating oil and let it soak briefly.

Step 5: Remove the front control arm bolt

  • Use a 17mm socket or 18mm socket to remove the front control arm mounting bolt.
  • Support the arm with one hand as you remove the last fastener.

Step 6: Remove the control arm

  • Lower and wiggle the arm out of the subframe and knuckle area.
  • Use a rubber mallet only if the arm is stuck in place.

Step 7: Install the new control arm

  • Position the new arm in the subframe and start the front and rear bolts by hand.
  • Attach the lower ball joint to the knuckle and start the fastener by hand.
  • Use a ratchet and the correct socket to snug all hardware, but do not fully tighten yet.
  • Hand-start every bolt to avoid cross-threading.

Step 8: Tighten the suspension at ride height

  • Raise the lower control arm slightly with the floor jack so the suspension sits at normal ride height.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the control arm mounting bolts and ball joint fastener to factory specification for your Sentra.
  • Torque to OEM specification for the front control arm bolts and ball joint fastener.

Step 9: Reinstall the splash shield and wheels

  • Reinstall the lower cover using a 10mm socket.
  • Install the wheels and snug the lug nuts with a 19mm socket.
  • Lower the car and torque the lug nuts with a torque wrench to OEM wheel lug specification.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the car and check for clunks, pulling, or unusual steering feel.
  • Test drive slowly at first and listen for suspension noise over bumps.
  • Get a front-end alignment after replacing control arms.
  • Recheck lug nut torque after the first drive.
