🔧 Front Lower Control Arms - Replacement

The front lower control arms connect the wheel assembly to the frame and control suspension movement. Replacing them can fix clunks, unstable steering, uneven tire wear, and looseness from worn bushings or a bad ball joint.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on level ground and chock the rear wheels.
  • Use jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Do not allow the axle, brake hose, or steering knuckle to hang unsupported.
  • Final suspension bolt torque must be done at ride height to protect the bushings.
  • Get a wheel alignment after this repair.
  • No battery disconnect is required.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts before lifting.
  • Raise the front and support it with jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels.
  • Spray all control arm fasteners with penetrating oil and let it soak.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack to raise the front of the vehicle at the proper lift point.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels using a 19mm socket.
  • Do one side at a time if you want a reference.

Step 2: Disconnect the ball joint from the knuckle

  • Use a 17mm socket or 19mm socket to remove the lower ball joint nut.
  • Use a ball joint separator (specialty) to break the ball joint loose from the steering knuckle.
  • If needed, tap the side of the knuckle with a hammer to release the taper.
  • Do not pry on the boot.

Step 3: Remove the control arm mounting bolts

  • Use a 17mm socket, 19mm socket, or 21mm socket depending on the fastener size used on your vehicle.
  • Remove the front and rear control arm pivot bolts.
  • Support the arm with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
  • Remove the control arm from the vehicle.

Step 4: Install the new control arm

  • Position the new control arm into place.
  • Start all pivot bolts by hand first with the correct socket.
  • Insert the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.
  • Install the new ball joint nut by hand.

Step 5: Snug the fasteners

  • Use a ratchet to snug the pivot bolts.
  • Use a ratchet to snug the ball joint nut.
  • Do not final-torque the pivot bolts yet.

Step 6: Torque at ride height

  • Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle so the suspension is at normal ride height.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the control arm pivot bolts.
  • Torque the control arm pivot bolts to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
  • Torque the lower ball joint nut to 44 Nm (32 ft-lbs).
  • Ride-height torque helps the bushings last longer.

Step 7: Reinstall the wheels

  • Install the wheels and hand-tighten the lug nuts with a 19mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle fully.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.

✅ After Repair

  • Check that all fasteners are tight.
  • Turn the steering wheel lock to lock and listen for noises.
  • Inspect the ball joint boot and bushings for correct seating.
  • Drive carefully to a shop for a front-end alignment.
  • Recheck torque after the first short road test.
