🔧 Camry - Front Lower Control Arm Replacement

The front lower control arm holds the wheel in the correct position and helps control ride and steering feel. If the bushings are torn or the ball joint is loose, you may hear clunks, feel wandering, or see uneven tire wear. Replacing the arm usually restores stability and steering precision.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface and support the vehicle with jack stands; never rely on the jack alone.
  • Use wheel chocks on the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • Keep hands clear of the suspension while lowering or raising the arm.
  • The control arm carries spring tension through the suspension; move it slowly and carefully.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
  • Get the front-end alignment checked after repair.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (pair, rated 3-ton minimum)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the control arm bolts, nut, and ball joint area if rust is present.
  • Take a quick photo of bolt positions.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front end

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Camry at the approved lift point.
  • Place the vehicle on jack stands and confirm it is stable before working underneath.
  • Remove the front wheel using the 21mm socket.

Step 2: Mark the alignment reference points

  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the control arm bolts and washers before removal.
  • This helps preserve the original alignment as much as possible.

Step 3: Remove the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle

  • Use a 19mm socket and 17mm wrench to remove the ball joint fastener at the knuckle.
  • Separate the ball joint from the knuckle with a ball joint separator (specialty).
  • Do not hammer directly on the ball joint stud.

Step 4: Remove the control arm mounting bolts

  • Use a 19mm socket, 21mm socket, and breaker bar to remove the front and rear control arm bolts.
  • If the bolts are tight, hold the opposite side with a 17mm wrench or 19mm wrench as needed.
  • Lower the arm slowly and slide it out of the subframe.

Step 5: Install the new control arm

  • Position the new control arm in place and start all bolts by hand.
  • Reconnect the ball joint stud to the steering knuckle using the new hardware if supplied.
  • Leave the pivot bolts slightly loose for now so the bushings can settle at ride height.

Step 6: Snug and torque the fasteners

  • Reinstall the wheel loosely and lower the vehicle so the suspension sits at normal ride height.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the control arm pivot bolts to 131 Nm (97 ft-lbs).
  • Tighten the ball joint fastener to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
  • Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side if needed

  • Replace both front control arms if wear is present on both sides.
  • Repeat the same steps using the same tools.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and listen for clunks or rubbing.
  • Drive slowly at first and confirm the steering feels centered.
  • Schedule a front-end alignment as soon as possible.
  • Recheck all fasteners after a short test drive.
