🔧 Camry - Front Ball Joint Replacement

On your Camry, the front lower ball joint is serviced with the front lower control arm assembly, so the usual repair is replacing the complete lower control arm rather than pressing in just the ball joint. This keeps the suspension geometry correct and avoids damage to the aluminum-steel joint area.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the car with jack stands; never work under a vehicle held only by a jack.
  • Use wheel chocks on the opposite wheels.
  • Do not let the brake hose or axle hang by itself while the control arm is loose.
  • Hybrid system high-voltage parts are not involved in this repair, so battery disconnect is not required for the suspension work.
  • Final bolt torque should be set with the suspension at ride height to avoid bushing preload.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • 17mm socket
  • 19mm socket
  • 21mm socket
  • 22mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Long-handled wrench
  • Ball joint separator (specialty)
  • Hammer
  • Penetrating oil
  • Bungee cord or mechanic's wire
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front lower control arm assembly with ball joint - Qty: 2
  • Front lower control arm bolts and nuts - Qty: 1 set
  • Front stabilizer link nut hardware - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the car.
  • Lift the front and secure the car on jack stands.
  • If replacing one side, it is best practice to replace both front lower control arms as a pair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the wheel

  • Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to loosen and remove the front wheel lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and set it aside.

Step 2: Free the ball joint from the steering knuckle

  • Use penetrating oil on the ball joint nut and stud area.
  • Use a 19mm socket or 19mm wrench to remove the ball joint castle nut or flange nut, depending on hardware style.
  • Use a ball joint separator (specialty) to break the stud free from the knuckle.
  • Do not hit the stud threads.

Step 3: Disconnect the stabilizer link if needed

  • If the stabilizer link blocks access, use a 17mm socket and matching wrench to remove it from the lower arm.
  • Move the link aside carefully.

Step 4: Remove the lower control arm

  • Use a 21mm socket and 22mm socket to remove the front and rear lower control arm mounting bolts.
  • Support the arm with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
  • Remove the complete lower control arm and ball joint assembly.

Step 5: Install the new lower control arm

  • Position the new control arm in the subframe.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand first.
  • Install the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle and hand-tighten the nut.
  • If removed, reinstall the stabilizer link.

Step 6: Tighten the fasteners

  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the ball joint nut and control arm bolts.
  • Torque to factory specification for your Camry's control arm and ball joint fasteners.
  • Final-tighten the lower control arm pivot bolts with the suspension supported at ride height.
  • Ride height means the arm is sitting like normal driving position.

Step 7: Reinstall the wheel

  • Install the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  • Use a torque wrench and 21mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.

✅ After Repair

  • Test drive at low speed and listen for clunks or pops.
  • Check steering wheel centering.
  • Get a professional wheel alignment after this repair.
  • Recheck all fasteners after the test drive.
