🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and support the front end
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of the RAV4 at the proper lift point.
- Place jack stands under the front support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
- Remove the front wheels with a 21mm socket.
Step 2: Access the ball joint area
- Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room on the side you are working on.
- Inspect the ball joint, knuckle, and lower control arm for rust or damage.
- Take a quick photo before disassembly.
Step 3: Separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle
- Use a 17mm socket or 19mm socket to remove the ball joint castle nut, depending on the fastener style on your vehicle.
- If a cotter pin is installed, remove it first with a flat screwdriver or pliers.
- Use a ball joint separator to pop the taper loose from the steering knuckle.
- If needed, tap the knuckle boss with a hammer while keeping the separator under tension.
Step 4: Remove the ball joint from the lower control arm
- Use a 14mm socket to remove the ball joint mounting bolts.
- Support the knuckle with a bungee cord so the brake hose and axle are not stretched.
- Remove the ball joint from the control arm.
Step 5: Install the new ball joint
- Position the new ball joint into the lower control arm.
- Install the mounting bolts by hand first with a 14mm socket.
- Torque the ball joint mounting bolts to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
- Insert the stud into the steering knuckle.
- Install the new nut and torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
- Install a new cotter pin if the nut uses one. Never back the nut off to fit the pin unless the nut design requires it.
Step 6: Reassemble the wheel end
- Check that the ball joint seat is fully engaged and the boot is not twisted.
- Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts with a 21mm socket.
- Lower the RAV4 to the ground and torque the lug nuts to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side if needed
- If you are replacing both sides, repeat the same process on the opposite front corner.
- Replacing in pairs keeps steering feel even.

- Start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked. Listen for clunks or binding.
- Drive slowly at first and confirm the steering feels tight and centered.
- Schedule a front end alignment as soon as possible.
- Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive.
