Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the wheel
- Use a 21mm socket to remove the front wheel lug nuts.
- Remove the wheel and set it aside flat.
Step 2: Access the ball joint area
- Use a 14mm socket and trim clip removal tool to remove any splash shield fasteners blocking access.
- Inspect the lower control arm, steering knuckle, and ball joint for damage.
Step 3: Separate the ball joint from the knuckle
- Use a 17mm socket and breaker bar to remove the ball joint pinch bolt and nut.
- Use a ball joint separator (specialty) to free the ball joint stud from the knuckle.
- Do not strike the stud threads.
Step 4: Remove the ball joint from the lower arm
- Use a 14mm socket or 19mm socket depending on the fastener style to remove the ball joint mounting hardware.
- Lower the arm slightly with a pry bar if needed to release tension.
- Remove the old ball joint.
Step 5: Install the new ball joint
- Position the new ball joint in the control arm.
- Install the mounting hardware finger-tight first.
- Insert the stud into the knuckle and install the new pinch bolt and nut.
- Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs) for the pinch bolt, if your replacement hardware matches the factory fastener style.
Step 6: Tighten the mounting fasteners
- Use the appropriate 14mm socket or 19mm socket to tighten the ball joint mounting fasteners.
- Torque to 49-68 Nm (36-50 ft-lbs) for the ball joint mounting fasteners, depending on the replacement hardware design.
- Install a new cotter pin if your setup uses one.
Step 7: Reinstall the wheel
- Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
- Lower the vehicle to the ground.
- Use a torque wrench and 21mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Final inspection
- Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock and confirm there is no binding.
- Check that all fasteners are fully seated.
- Road test slowly and listen for clunks or popping.
✅ After Repair
- Get a four-wheel alignment as soon as possible.
- Recheck lug nut torque after about 50-100 km of driving.
- If the steering wheel is off-center, return for alignment correction.
