🔧 Ball Joints - Front Lower Ball Joint Replacement

On your Rogue, the front lower ball joint is part of the front suspension and lets the wheel turn and move up and down smoothly. If it gets loose, you may hear clunks, feel wandering, or see uneven tire wear. Assumption: this guide covers both front lower ball joints and replaces them in pairs.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a flat surface and keep the parking brake set.
  • Use jack stands. Never rely on the floor jack alone.
  • Ball joint separation can release the knuckle suddenly. Keep hands clear.
  • If your Rogue has ABS wiring or brake hoses near the knuckle, do not stretch them.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
  • Replace both sides so steering feel stays even.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)

  • Ball joint hardware kit - Qty: 2
  • New cotter pins - Qty: 2
  • Front wheel alignment - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts before lifting.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the ball joint nut and fasteners.
  • If the joint is seized, plan extra time for separation.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front end

  • Use the 21mm lug socket and breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts, but do not remove them yet.
  • Use the floor jack to raise the front of the vehicle at the proper lift point.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands and make sure it is stable.
  • Remove the front wheels.

Step 2: Access the ball joint

  • Use the 14mm socket or 17mm socket to remove any splash shield or undertray pieces blocking access.
  • Use a wire brush to clean exposed fasteners.
  • Mark the position of any parts that may affect reassembly with a paint marker.

Step 3: Separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle

  • Use the 19mm socket and ratchet to remove the ball joint retaining nut.
  • If the stud spins, hold it only as needed and keep the tool fully seated.
  • Use the ball joint separator (specialty) to break the taper loose from the knuckle.
  • Do not hit the stud threads directly.

Step 4: Remove the lower control arm or ball joint assembly

  • Use the 17mm socket and 19mm socket to remove the fasteners holding the lower control arm or ball joint assembly, depending on the serviceable design on your Rogue.
  • If your replacement is a complete lower control arm, remove the rear and front arm bolts with the correct sockets.
  • If your joint is serviced separately, remove the mounting hardware from the steering knuckle side as equipped.
  • Lower the assembly out carefully.

Step 5: Install the new ball joint or control arm assembly

  • Position the new part in place by hand first.
  • Start all fasteners by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the ratchet and correct socket to snug the hardware.
  • Torque to factory specification for your exact fastener set.
  • If your part includes a new castle nut, install a new cotter pin after torquing.

Step 6: Reconnect the knuckle and finish tightening

  • Use the floor jack under the lower control arm to raise it slightly if needed so the joint seats correctly.
  • Use the 19mm socket to tighten the ball joint nut.
  • Torque to factory specification for the ball joint nut.
  • Install a new cotter pin if the design uses one.

Step 7: Reassemble the front end

  • Reinstall any splash shields with the 10mm socket or 12mm socket.
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle with the floor jack.
  • Use the 21mm lug socket and torque wrench to torque the lug nuts to factory specification.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked.
  • Listen for any clunks or popping noises.
  • Check that the steering wheel is centered.
  • Drive slowly at first and recheck for noises.
  • Get a front-end alignment as soon as possible.
