🔧 Ball Joints - Replacement
Assumption: This covers the front lower ball joints. On your RAV4, the ball joint is serviced at the front suspension and tied into steering and wheel support, so this repair must be done carefully and torqued correctly.
Worn ball joints can cause clunks, loose steering, uneven tire wear, and unsafe handling. If the joint is badly worn, replace it right away and inspect the control arm and tie rod ends at the same time.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Support the vehicle with jack stands; never work under a vehicle held only by a jack.
- Keep hands clear when separating the steering knuckle; stored suspension tension can release suddenly.
- Do not let the axle shaft hang at a sharp angle on AWD models.
- Use a new cotter pin if the ball joint nut uses one.
- Resetting or disconnecting the 12V battery is not usually required for this repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Remove the front wheel
- Use a 21mm socket to remove the lug nuts, then remove the wheel.
- Set the wheel aside flat and out of the way.
Step 2: Free the ball joint from the steering knuckle
- Use a wire brush and penetrating oil on the ball joint nut and stud area.

- Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter pin first if equipped.
- Use a ball joint separator to break the taper loose from the knuckle.
- Do not hit the stud threads directly.
Step 3: Remove the ball joint from the lower control arm
- Use a 14mm socket to remove the ball joint mounting bolts from the lower control arm.
- Lower the ball joint out of the arm and remove it from the vehicle.
- Inspect the control arm mounting holes for cracks or elongation.
Step 4: Install the new ball joint
- Position the new ball joint in the lower control arm.
- Use a 14mm socket to install the mounting bolts finger-tight first.
- Torque the ball joint mounting bolts to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Reconnect the ball joint to the steering knuckle
- Align the stud into the knuckle and install the new castle nut.
- Use a 19mm socket to tighten the nut to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
- Continue tightening only if needed to line up the cotter pin hole; never loosen more than needed to fit the pin.
- Install a new cotter pin with needle-nose pliers.
Step 6: Reinstall the wheel
- Reinstall the wheel and hand-start the lug nuts.
- Lower the vehicle and use a 21mm socket with a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock.
- Test drive slowly and listen for clunks or popping.
- Recheck lug nut torque after the road test.
- Get a front-end alignment checked after ball joint work.
- Alignment is strongly recommended.
