🔧 Ball Joint - Front Lower Control Arm Replacement

Assumption: On your Rogue, the front lower ball joint is serviced with the front lower control arm assembly. This is the normal repair path, since the ball joint is not typically replaced by itself.

Replacing the worn lower ball joint restores steering stability, reduces clunks, and helps keep the front wheels aligned correctly. Because this repair affects suspension and steering, it should be followed by a professional wheel alignment.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the vehicle securely with jack stands before removing any suspension parts.
  • Do not work under a vehicle held up only by a jack.
  • The front suspension is loaded by springs, so keep hands clear when separating joints.
  • If the vehicle has an electronic parking brake, keep it engaged and leave the rear wheels untouched.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
  • Torque all suspension fasteners with the vehicle at normal ride height where specified.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (2-ton minimum, pair)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Lug wrench or 21mm socket
  • Metric socket set
  • Ratchet

  • Breaker bar
  • 21mm wrench
  • 17mm socket
  • 19mm socket
  • 24mm socket
  • Pry bar
  • Ball joint separator (specialty)

  • Stabilizer link nut or hardware - Qty: 1 if removed and damaged

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Break the front wheel lug nuts loose before lifting.
  • Replace control arms in pairs if both sides are worn.
  • Plan on getting a wheel alignment after the repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front of the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack to raise the front of the vehicle at the proper lift point.
  • Place jack stands under the front support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
  • Remove the front wheel with a 21mm socket or lug wrench.

Step 2: Remove the lower fasteners

  • Use a 17mm socket or 19mm socket to remove the lower control arm mounting bolts.
  • If the sway bar link or nearby bracket blocks access, remove it with the correct socket or wrench.
  • Use penetrating oil on stubborn fasteners before removal.

Step 3: Separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle

  • Use a 24mm socket or the correct socket for the ball joint pinch fastener if equipped.
  • Use a ball joint separator to break the taper loose from the knuckle.
  • Do not strike the steering knuckle directly.

Step 4: Remove the control arm assembly

  • Use a pry bar to carefully work the control arm out of its mounts.
  • Remove the arm from the vehicle.
  • Inspect the bushings and compare the new part to the old one before installing.

Step 5: Install the new control arm

  • Position the new front lower control arm into place by hand.
  • Install the mounting bolts finger-tight first.
  • Seat the ball joint stud into the knuckle and install the nut.
  • Torque to manufacturer specification for the lower control arm and ball joint fasteners.
  • Final torque should be set at ride height when specified.

Step 6: Reassemble and torque

  • Reinstall any sway bar link or bracket removed earlier.
  • Reinstall the wheel and snug the lug nuts by hand.
  • Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque wheel lug nuts to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to check for binding.
  • Drive slowly at first and listen for clunks or pops.
  • Check that the steering wheel is centered.
  • Schedule a professional wheel alignment right away.
  • Recheck all fasteners after a short test drive if any noise is noticed.
