🔧 Front Lower Ball Joint - Replacement

The front lower ball joint lets the steering knuckle pivot while keeping the wheel attached to the suspension. On your Accord, this repair is done from the front suspension knuckle and lower control arm area, then the joint is separated and replaced as an assembly or pressed component depending on the exact arm setup.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the vehicle securely on jack stands before removing any suspension parts.
  • Do not work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Ball joint separation can release tension suddenly. Keep hands clear of pinch points.
  • If your Accord has an ABS sensor wire routed near the knuckle, unplug it before moving the knuckle too far.
  • After suspension work, get a professional alignment. The wheel angle will change.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (pair)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Breaker bar
  • 19mm socket
  • 21mm socket
  • 22mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Ball joint separator tool (specialty)
  • Pry bar
  • Hammer
  • Penetrating oil
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front lower ball joint - Qty: 1
  • Front lower ball joint pinch bolt and nut - Qty: 1
  • Front suspension cotter pins - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts before lifting the vehicle.
  • Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheel on the side you are servicing.
  • Spray stuck fasteners with penetrating oil early.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the wheel

  • Use a 19mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts, then remove the wheel after the vehicle is safely on stands.

Step 2: Access the ball joint area

  • Turn the steering wheel outward for better access to the knuckle and lower control arm area.
  • Inspect the joint, boot, and nearby ABS wiring before separating anything.

Step 3: Remove the ball joint fastener

  • Use a 19mm socket or 21mm socket to remove the ball joint pinch bolt or retaining nut, depending on the exact joint style on your Accord.
  • If a cotter pin is present, use needle-nose pliers to remove it first.
  • Torque on reinstall: tighten to Honda factory specification.

Step 4: Separate the ball joint from the knuckle

  • Use a ball joint separator tool to break the taper loose from the steering knuckle.
  • If needed, use a hammer with light strikes on the knuckle boss, not the stud.
  • Do not hit the threaded stud directly.

Step 5: Remove the old ball joint

  • Use a 21mm socket or 22mm socket with a ratchet to remove the fasteners holding the joint to the control arm, if your setup uses a bolt-on joint.
  • If your Accord uses a pressed-in style on the arm, remove the lower control arm and have the joint pressed out and in with a hydraulic press.
  • Inspect the control arm and knuckle for cracks or looseness.
  • Torque on reinstall: tighten to Honda factory specification.

Step 6: Install the new ball joint

  • Position the new ball joint and start all fasteners by hand.
  • Use the torque wrench to tighten the mounting hardware evenly.
  • Insert the stud into the knuckle and install a new cotter pin if equipped.
  • Torque on reinstall: tighten to Honda factory specification.

Step 7: Reassemble the suspension

  • Reconnect any ABS wiring clips you moved aside.
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle and use a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to Honda factory specification.

Step 8: Check the repair

  • Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel left and right to confirm smooth movement.
  • Road test slowly and listen for clicking, popping, or clunking.
  • Schedule a front-end alignment as soon as possible.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for loose hardware after a short test drive.
  • Verify the steering wheel is centered.
  • Have the alignment checked and corrected.
