🔧 Front Lower Ball Joint - Replacement

On your RAV4, the front lower ball joint is part of the steering and suspension pivot at the knuckle. If it has play, noise, or torn grease boots, it should be replaced right away because it affects steering control and tire wear.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the vehicle securely with jack stands. Never work under a vehicle held only by a jack.
  • The front suspension must be unloaded before separating the ball joint.
  • Use caution near the axle, brake hose, and ABS wire so nothing gets stretched or torn.
  • If the ball joint is rusted into the steering knuckle, a separator tool may release suddenly.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • Keep the steering knuckle supported.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts before lifting the vehicle.
  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself room at the side you are working on.
  • Use a scan tool only if you have a steering angle or alignment warning after repair.
  • Replace both sides to keep steering balanced.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the vehicle at the proper jacking point.
  • Support it with jack stands placed at the front support points.
  • Remove the wheel with a 21mm socket.

Step 2: Remove the brake caliper and rotor if needed for access

  • If access is tight, use a 14mm socket to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Hang the caliper with wire so the brake hose is not stretched.
  • Remove the rotor if it blocks access to the knuckle area.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the hose.

Step 3: Separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle

  • Remove the cotter pin with needle-nose pliers.
  • Use a 19mm socket and breaker bar to remove the ball joint stud nut.
  • Use a ball joint separator tool to release the stud from the knuckle.
  • If needed, use a pickle fork separator and hammer to break the taper loose.

Step 4: Remove the ball joint from the lower control arm

  • Use a 17mm socket or 14mm socket for the mounting bolts, depending on hardware style.
  • Remove the ball joint from the control arm.
  • Clean the mounting surface with a rag and inspect for damage.

Step 5: Install the new ball joint

  • Position the new ball joint in the control arm.
  • Install the mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench and tighten the ball joint mounting bolts to 59 Nm (43 ft-lbs).
  • Insert the stud into the knuckle and install the new nut.
  • Tighten the stud nut to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
  • Install a new cotter pin with needle-nose pliers.

Step 6: Reassemble the brake and wheel

  • Reinstall the rotor and caliper using a 14mm socket if removed.
  • Torque caliper bracket bolts to 105 Nm (77 ft-lbs).
  • Install the wheel and torque the lug nuts with a 21mm socket to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side if needed

  • If you are replacing both sides, repeat the same steps on the opposite front ball joint.
  • Work one side at a time.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to check for binding or noises.
  • Test-drive slowly and listen for clunks over bumps.
  • Get a front wheel alignment immediately after the repair.
  • Recheck torque on the lug nuts after the first drive.
