🔧 Grand Cherokee - Front Turn Signal Repair
On the Summit, the front turn signals are built into the headlight as sealed LEDs, not separate replaceable bulbs. To fix a dead or dim front turn signal, you must replace the entire headlight assembly on that side.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 2–3 hours per side
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before working on lights to avoid shorts or accidental operation.
- ⚠️ Support the front bumper cover carefully; forcing it can crack paint and plastic.
- ⚠️ Keep track of all screws and clips; many are plastic and can break if over-tightened.
- ⚠️ Do not touch any projector lens with bare fingers; oils can stain the surface.
- ⚠️ If your Summit has automatic headlamp leveling, do not pull on the wiring; always unplug connectors gently.

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 🔹Front headlight assembly with integrated LED turn signal (left or right, Summit) - Qty: 1
- 🔹Front bumper cover push-pin clips - Qty: 6–10 (recommended, some usually break)
- 🔹Wheel well liner push-pin clips - Qty: 4–8 (as needed)
- 🔹Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 small tube
📋 Before You Begin
- Park the Grand Cherokee on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Open the hood and prop it securely.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
- If you only have one new headlight, verify it matches your existing Summit headlight (same connectors and shape) before disassembling the front.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise front slightly and remove front wheel well fasteners
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front just enough for easier access to the wheel wells, then support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Turn the steering fully away from the side you’re working on to create room in the wheel well.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 8mm socket to remove the screws holding the front part of the wheel well liner to the bumper cover on that side.
- Use a flat trim removal tool to pop out any plastic push-pin clips in the front of the wheel well liner.
- Gently pull the front edge of the wheel well liner back to expose the inside of the bumper and headlight mounting area.
Step 2: Remove top radiator cover and upper grille fasteners
- Use a flat trim removal tool to lift the plastic push pins holding the black plastic cover at the front of the engine bay (above the grille).
- Lift off the plastic cover and set it aside.
- Use an 8mm socket to remove any visible screws along the top of the grille and bumper cover.
- Torque for reinstallation: Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) for these small screws.
Step 3: Release lower bumper cover fasteners
- From underneath the front bumper, use an 8mm socket or Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screws holding the lower edge of the bumper cover to the splash shield.
- Use a flat trim removal tool to pop out any plastic push-pin clips along the lower edge as needed.
- Torque for reinstallation: Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) on these lower screws.
Step 4: Release bumper cover sides near the fenders
- From the wheel well area, reach behind the bumper cover near the fender seam.
- There are small plastic tabs or clips that lock the bumper to the fender; carefully push them outward using a flat trim removal tool while gently pulling the bumper cover forward with your other hand.
- Pull slowly to avoid cracking paint.
- Repeat for the other side if needed so the bumper cover can move forward slightly.
Step 5: Pull bumper cover forward and disconnect wiring
- With a helper if possible, gently pull the bumper cover forward a few inches from the vehicle.
- Reach behind and disconnect fog light connectors and any parking sensor harnesses using your hands or a small flathead screwdriver to lift locking tabs.
- Do not let the bumper hang by the wires.
- Set the bumper cover on a padded surface or use a fender cover or thick towel to protect paint if you rest it against the vehicle.
Step 6: Remove the headlight mounting bolts
- Locate the headlight assembly on the side you’re repairing.
- Use a 10mm socket with ratchet handle 3/8" and 3" ratchet extension to remove the upper headlight mounting bolts.
- Use the same tools to remove the side and lower mounting bolts accessible now that the bumper is forward.
- Keep bolts organized; they will be reused.
- Torque for reinstallation: Torque headlight bolts to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
Step 7: Disconnect headlight wiring and remove assembly
- Gently pull the headlight assembly forward a few inches.
- Locate the main electrical connector on the back of the headlight.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver if needed to lift the connector’s lock tab, then unplug it by hand.
- Remove the headlight assembly completely and place it on a clean, soft surface.
Step 8: Prepare and install the new headlight assembly
- Compare the new headlight with the old one to confirm same connectors, mounting points, and shape.
- Apply a very light smear of dielectric grease to the electrical connector pins on the vehicle side.
- Plug the vehicle connector into the new headlight until it clicks.
- Position the new headlight into place, making sure alignment tabs seat correctly.
- Install the mounting bolts by hand first, then tighten with a 10mm socket and ratchet handle 3/8".
- Torque headlight bolts to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall bumper cover and wheel well liners
- Lift the bumper cover back into position with your helper.
- Reconnect fog light and sensor connectors by hand, making sure each snaps fully into place.
- Engage the side tabs between the bumper and fenders by pushing them together firmly by hand.
- Reinstall upper bumper and grille screws with an 8mm socket and tighten to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Reinstall lower bumper screws with an 8mm socket and tighten to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the wheel well liner screws and clips using a Phillips #2 screwdriver and flat trim removal tool.
- Replace any damaged clips with new ones by hand or using the flat trim removal tool.
Step 10: Reinstall top radiator cover and reconnect battery
- Place the plastic radiator cover back over the top front area.
- Reinstall its push-pin clips using a flat trim removal tool to press the centers back down.
- Lower the vehicle carefully using the floor jack and remove the jack stands and wheel chocks.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and tighten snugly. Torque to 5–6 Nm (44–53 in-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition on and test the turn signals, parking lights, low beams, and high beams on the repaired side.
- Check that the LED turn signal is bright, flashes at normal speed, and has no flicker.
- Walk around the front and verify the bumper gaps are even and the headlight sits flush with the fender and grille.
- Take a short drive at night to confirm headlight aim looks reasonable; if needed, have aim checked and adjusted professionally.
