Step-by-step door panel removal, latch/actuator swap, required tools/parts, and safety tips for 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023
š§ XT5 - Front Door Lock Actuator Replacement
On your XT5, the ādoor lock actuatorā is typically part of the door latch/lock assembly inside the door, not a separate little motor you can swap from the outside. The exact steps (and a couple connector/fastener details) change depending on which front door and which part you purchased.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Disconnect the 12V battery before working in the door because the A-pillar/door area may have side-impact airbag wiring.
- ā ļø Keep the window fully up; donāt bump the glass while the panel is off.
- ā ļø Donāt tear the water shield (vapor barrier); it prevents water leaks and wind noise.
- ā ļø Donāt probe yellow airbag connectors with a test light or meter.

- Wait at least 2 minutes before unplugging any door wiring connectors.
- Put painterās tape along the door edge and handle area to protect paint.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the exact door and the exact part youāre replacing
- Tell me which front door: Driver (left) or Passenger (right).
- Tell me what you bought: a full latch/actuator assembly (most common) or a separate actuator motor.
Step 2: Remove the front door trim panel (basic removal)
- Use a trim/panel removal tool (plastic) to pop the small cover behind the interior door handle (if equipped), then remove the exposed screw using a Torx T20 screwdriver.
- Use the trim/panel removal tool (plastic) to lift the window/lock switch panel, then unplug connectors using a pick tool (small) to release the locking tabs.
- Remove any remaining armrest/pull-handle screws using a Torx T20 screwdriver or Torx T30 screwdriver (varies by door panel build).
- Starting at the bottom edge, use the trim/panel removal tool (plastic) to pop the panel clips loose.
- Lift the panel straight up to unhook it from the top ledge, then disconnect the handle cable(s) using needle-nose pliers if needed.
Step 3: Peel back the water shield (vapor barrier)
- Use your hands and a trim/panel removal tool (plastic) to peel the shield back slowly.
- If the adhesive wonāt re-stick, plan to reseal it with butyl seal tape during reassembly.
Step 4: Iāll provide the exact latch/actuator removal steps and torque specs once you answer Step 1
- The remaining steps depend on which side (LH/RH) and whether your replacement is the full latch/actuator assembly.
- Reply with the two answers from Step 1, and Iāll continue with the correct fastener locations, cable routing, connector release method, and Torque to XX Nm (YY ft-lbs) specs for your XT5.
ā After Repair
- Reconnect the battery using a 10mm socket.
- Cycle the lock/unlock on the door switch and key fob 10+ times and confirm the inside handle and outside handle both open the door correctly.
- Confirm the window switch, mirror controls, and door courtesy light work before fully snapping the trim panel back on.
- Check for water leaks after the next car wash or rain (water shield must be fully sealed).
