On your Altima, the “door lock actuator” is built into the door latch assembly at the rear edge of the door. Replacing it means removing the interior door panel, unplugging the latch, and swapping the latch/actuator unit so the door locks/unlocks reliably again.

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Lower the window slightly, then raise it fully (window fully UP for the job).
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable, then wait 3 minutes.
  • Put painter’s tape on painted edges near the work area to prevent scratches.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the door switch panel

  • Use a trim removal tool (plastic) (a plastic pry tool that won’t scratch panels) to lift the window/lock switch panel.
  • Unplug the electrical connectors by pressing the locking tabs (use a pick tool if needed).

Step 2: Remove screws holding the door panel

  • Remove the screw behind/near the inner door handle using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Remove the armrest/door pull screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver (some vehicles may use 10mm socket instead).

Step 3: Pop the door panel clips loose

  • Start at the bottom corner and use a trim removal tool (plastic) to pop the panel clips free.
  • If a clip is stubborn, use panel clip pliers to pull it straight out.

Step 4: Lift the door panel up and disconnect cables

  • Lift the door panel straight UP to unhook it from the top edge by the window.
  • Disconnect the inside handle cable using needle-nose pliers if needed. (The handle cable is a “Bowden cable,” meaning a cable inside a sleeve.)
  • Unplug any remaining electrical connectors (courtesy light, speaker, etc.).

Step 5: Peel back the vapor barrier

  • Carefully peel back the plastic sheet using your fingers and a trim removal tool (plastic). (This is the “vapor barrier,” which keeps water off the cabin side of the door.)
  • Don’t tear it—reuse if possible.

Step 6: Disconnect the latch/actuator wiring

  • Locate the latch connector near the rear of the door.
  • Press the lock tab and unplug it (use a pick tool gently if the tab is tight).

Step 7: Disconnect the door handle/lock rods from the latch

  • At the latch area, identify the metal rods going to the inside handle and outside handle.
  • Use a pick tool to flip the small plastic retainers open, then lift each rod out.
  • Take a quick photo before removing rods.

Step 8: Remove the latch/actuator assembly

  • Open the door and locate the three latch screws on the rear edge of the door.
  • Remove the three screws using a Torx T30 bit with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" extension.
  • Maneuver the latch/actuator assembly out through the door access opening.

Step 9: Install the new latch/actuator assembly

  • Place the new latch/actuator into the door the same way the old one came out.
  • Start the three latch screws by hand, then tighten using the Torx T30 bit.
  • Torque to 62 in-lb (7 Nm) using a torque wrench (in-lb capable).
  • Reconnect the rods and snap the plastic retainers fully closed (use needle-nose pliers if needed).
  • Reconnect the latch electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 10: Re-seal the vapor barrier and reinstall the door panel

  • Press the vapor barrier back into place. If the seal is weak, add butyl tape (specialty) around the edges.
  • Reconnect the inside handle cable and all electrical connectors.
  • Hang the door panel on the top lip first, then press the clips in around the perimeter (use your palm).
  • Reinstall the armrest/handle screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver (or 10mm socket if equipped).
  • Reinstall the switch panel and plug connectors back in.

âś… After Repair

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Test from inside and outside: lock, unlock, open/close, and key fob operation.
  • Confirm the door locks smoothly with the engine running and with ignition OFF.
  • If the door won’t open from inside or outside, recheck rod routing and that each retainer is fully clipped.
