🔧 Water Pump - Replacement

Assumption: This procedure is for the engine coolant water pump on your Prius V, not the inverter electric coolant pump.

The engine water pump circulates coolant through the engine. When it leaks, makes bearing noise, or loses flow, the engine can overheat quickly. This job requires draining coolant, removing the drive belt, and replacing the pump and gasket.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool completely before opening the cooling system.
  • Hybrid vehicles can start the engine automatically; keep the key fob away from the car.
  • Disconnect the 12V battery negative cable before starting. Do not touch orange high-voltage cables.
  • Coolant is toxic. Catch it in a drain pan and keep it away from pets and children.
  • Do not reuse a leaking water pump gasket.

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant - Qty: 1 to 2 gallons
  • Drive belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Make sure the engine is fully cold.
  • Disconnect the 12V battery negative cable before starting.
  • Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands if needed for access.
  • Replace the belt if it is cracked or glazed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect power

  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative terminal of the 12V battery.
  • Wait at least 90 seconds before working near engine accessories.

Step 2: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • Open the radiator drain cock carefully and drain the engine coolant.
  • Close the drain cock when flow stops.

Step 3: Remove the drive belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
  • Slip the belt off the pulleys and remove it.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing first.

Step 4: Remove the water pump

  • Use a 12mm socket to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Remove the pump from the engine.
  • Expect a little coolant spill.

Step 5: Clean the mounting surface

  • Use a plastic scraper and shop towels to clean the gasket surface.
  • Do not scratch the aluminum housing.
  • Make sure the surface is clean and dry.

Step 6: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new water pump gasket on the pump.
  • Position the new pump on the engine.
  • Use a 12mm socket to install the bolts finger-tight first.
  • Tighten the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall the drive belt

  • Route the new or reused belt exactly as removed.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to move the tensioner.
  • Slip the belt fully onto every pulley.
  • Release the tensioner slowly.

Step 8: Refill the cooling system

  • Use a funnel to refill the radiator with the correct engine coolant.
  • Fill the reservoir to the MAX line.
  • Bleed air from the system by running the car and topping off as needed.

Step 9: Reconnect power and check operation

  • Reconnect the 12V battery negative cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Start the vehicle and let it reach operating temperature.
  • Check for leaks at the pump and hoses.
  • Verify heater output is warm and coolant level stays stable.

✅ After Repair

  • Recheck coolant level after the first drive and again when fully cold.
  • Inspect the pump area for leaks the next day.
  • If the engine overheats or you see bubbles continuing in the reservoir, stop and recheck the bleed process.
