🔧 550i - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your 550i uses dual engine air filters (one per air box) to keep dust and debris out of the turbos and engine. Replacing them restores proper airflow and helps performance and fuel economy.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: Stock dual air box setup with two panel filters.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool first; the turbo area gets very hot.
  • ⚠️ Keep tools, bolts, and debris out of the intake tubes.
  • ⚠️ Do not unplug sensors unless necessary; avoid breaking plastic connectors.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Torx T25 driver
  • Flat trim removal tool
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter (left) - Qty: 1
  • Engine air filter (right) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and remove any loose items around the engine bay.
  • Have shop towels ready to cover open intake tubes (this prevents dirt or hardware from falling in).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover (if equipped)

  • Grip the cover with both hands and pull upward firmly to release the rubber grommets.
  • If your cover uses fasteners, remove them with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Set the cover aside where it won’t get scratched.

Step 2: Locate both air filter boxes

  • Use a flashlight to find the two air boxes (left and right sides at the front/top of the engine bay).
  • Wipe loose dust away using shop towels so it doesn’t fall inside when opened.

Step 3: Open the first air box

  • Release the air box clips using a flat trim removal tool (a plastic pry tool that helps pop clips without breaking them).
  • If your air box uses screws instead of clips, remove them with a Torx T25 driver.
  • Lift the air box lid carefully—do not force it or twist the intake duct.

Step 4: Remove the old filter and clean the sealing surface

  • Lift the filter straight out by hand.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe the inside edge (the rubber sealing surface) where the filter sits.
  • Tip: Don’t let dirt fall into the lower air box.

Step 5: Install the new filter correctly

  • Drop the new filter into place by hand, making sure it sits flat and fully into the air box channel.
  • Check the perimeter seal all the way around—no corners should be folded or pinched.

Step 6: Close and secure the air box

  • Re-seat the lid evenly by hand so it doesn’t pinch the filter.
  • Re-latch the clips by hand, or reinstall screws using a Torx T25 driver.
  • If you loosened any duct clamps, tighten with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet until snug.

Step 7: Repeat for the second air box

  • Repeat Steps 3 through 6 on the other side using the same tools.
  • Double-check that both air boxes are fully clipped/screwed closed.

Step 8: Reinstall the engine cover

  • Press the cover down firmly over the mounting points until it seats.
  • If equipped with fasteners, reinstall using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet until snug.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Listen for air leaks (a loud hissing/whistling can mean an air box lid isn’t sealed).
  • Confirm no warning lights appear; if a light comes on, re-check that the air box is fully closed and no ducts are loose.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$220 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $40-$90 (parts only)

You Save: $80-$130 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
