🔧 Forester - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it helps maintain smooth acceleration, good fuel economy, and protects the engine from wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the engine off and let the engine bay cool for 10–15 minutes.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of moving parts; never work near the cooling fans with the engine on.
  • ⚠️ Do not run the engine with the air filter removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • Have a shop towel ready so nothing falls into the air box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Find the air filter housing

  • Use a flashlight to locate the air box (the black plastic box connected to the large intake tube) in the engine bay.

Step 2: Open the air box

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Release the air box metal retaining clips by hand (pull them off the lip of the air box).
  • If the top cover feels stuck, gently wiggle it—don’t force it or pry hard.
  • Tip: Keep the intake tube attached.

Step 3: Remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid just enough to access the filter.
  • Pull the old filter straight out by hand.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose dust/leaves from the lower air box.
  • Tip: Don’t let dirt fall into the intake opening.

Step 4: Install the new filter correctly

  • Compare the new filter to the old one to confirm the same size and shape.
  • Install the new filter into the lower air box, seating it evenly all the way around.
  • Make sure the filter’s sealing edge sits flat with no gaps or pinched corners.

Step 5: Close and latch the air box

  • Lower the air box lid back into place.
  • Reattach the retaining clips by hand until each clip is fully engaged.
  • Do a quick visual check that the lid seam is even on all sides.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling (a sign the air box isn’t fully sealed).
  • Take a short drive and confirm normal throttle response.
  • If your Forester has a maintenance reminder set, update your personal notes for the next change.
