1500 Classic - Engine Air Filter Replacement 🔧

Nice and simple job on your 1500 Classic. I’ll walk you through it step by step.

What you’ll need 🧰

  • 🔹 New engine air filter (panel type for the 3.6L V6)
  • 🔹 Flathead screwdriver or small trim tool (to help with clips if tight)
  • 🔹 Clean rag (to wipe out the air box)
  • 🔹 Optional: Shop vacuum (to suck out dust/debris from the air box)

Engine air filter = the filter that cleans the air going into the engine, inside a black plastic box under the hood.

Safety first ⚠️

  • 🔹 Park on level ground, set the parking brake.
  • 🔹 Shift to PARK and switch the ignition OFF.
  • 🔹 Let the engine cool a bit so you’re not leaning over hot parts.

Step 1 – Open the hood 🚗

  • 🔹 Inside the cab, pull the hood release handle (by the driver’s kick panel).
  • 🔹 Go to the front, reach under the center/front edge of the hood, move the safety latch and lift the hood.
  • 🔹 Secure the hood with the prop rod if your truck has one.

Step 2 – Locate the air filter box 📦

  • 🔹 Stand at the front of the truck, looking into the engine bay.
  • 🔹 On the passenger side, you’ll see a large black plastic box with a big hose (intake tube) going to the engine throttle body.
  • 🔹 That box is your air cleaner housing.

Step 3 – Open the air cleaner housing 🧩

  • 🔹 The housing lid is held by several metal clips around the edges (usually 3–4).
  • 🔹 One by one, flip the clips off the lid. They hinge away from the lid.
  • 🔹 You do not need to disconnect the big intake hose; just loosen the lid enough to lift it.
  • 🔹 Gently lift the lid and tilt it back or to the side to expose the filter. Don’t force it; move wiring or hoses slightly if needed.

Step 4 – Remove the old filter 🧺

  • 🔹 Note how the old filter is sitting (rubber seal orientation and which side faces up).
  • 🔹 Pull the old filter straight up and out of the housing.
  • 🔹 Check inside the air box for leaves, sand, or debris.
  • 🔹 Use a vacuum or a clean rag to remove dirt. Do not push dirt down the intake opening.

Step 5 – Install the new filter ✅

  • 🔹 Compare the new filter to the old one: same size, same shape, similar rubber seal.
  • 🔹 Place the new filter into the lower half of the air box with the rubber sealing edge seated all the way around the perimeter.
  • 🔹 Make sure it sits flat and fully inside the housing groove. If it’s sitting crooked, the lid won’t seal.

Step 6 – Close and latch the housing 🔒

  • 🔹 Lower the lid back into position, making sure the edges line up with the lower half of the box.
  • 🔹 You may need to slide the lid tabs into slots on one side first, then swing it down.
  • 🔹 Once aligned, snap all the metal clips back into place. Check each clip to be sure it’s fully engaged.
  • 🔹 Give the lid a gentle shake; it should feel solid with no gaps.

Step 7 – Final checks 🧾

  • 🔹 Look around the area to be sure you didn’t leave tools or rags in the engine bay.
  • 🔹 Close the hood securely.
  • 🔹 Start the engine and let it idle for a minute. It should run smoothly, just like before.

Tips & service interval 💡

  • 🔹 Ram typically recommends checking the engine air filter around 30,000 miles, but in dusty conditions (like construction or farm roads), replacing it sooner is smart.
  • 🔹 If you see a “Service Air Filter” message or notice reduced power and poor fuel economy, it’s a good time to inspect it.

If you’d like, tell me if you have the new filter already, and I can help you confirm the correct part style and any brand suggestions.
