🔧 Grand Cherokee WK - Engine Air Filter Replacement

You’ll be replacing the engine air filter inside the black plastic air box in the engine bay. This keeps your 3.6L engine breathing clean air and helps fuel economy and performance.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-25 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Make sure the engine is off and the key is out of the ignition.
  • 🛑 Let the engine cool for at least 15 minutes so you don’t touch hot parts.
  • 🛑 Work in a well-lit area with the vehicle on level ground and the parking brake set.
  • 🛑 Do not unplug any sensors or wiring on the air intake tubing unless necessary.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🧰 8mm socket
  • 🧰 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🧰 3" 1/4" drive extension
  • 🧰 Flathead screwdriver (medium size)
  • 🧰 Shop vacuum with small nozzle
  • 🧰 Clean shop towel or microfiber cloth
  • 🧰 Mechanic gloves
  • 🧰 Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔩 Engine air filter element (3.6L V6) - Qty: 1
  • 🔩 Air box cover screws (if any are missing or damaged) - Qty: up to 4

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • đźš— Park the Grand Cherokee on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Turn the engine off and remove the key or key fob from the vehicle.
  • 🌡️ Let the engine bay cool down so you’re not working around hot parts.
  • 🧼 Open the hood using the interior hood release, then the safety catch under the front edge of the hood, and prop it securely with the hood support rod.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Open the hood and stand in front of the vehicle.
  • The engine air box is the large black plastic box on the passenger side front of the engine bay, with a big plastic tube going from it to the engine.
  • Think of it as the engine’s “lungs” housing.

Step 2: Inspect the air box fasteners

  • Look around the top cover of the air box.
  • Your Grand Cherokee typically uses metal clips along the sides and/or small bolts or screws around the perimeter.
  • If there are clips, you will flip them open by hand or with the flathead screwdriver.
  • If there are screws/bolts, you will remove them with the 8mm socket, 3" extension, and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Note where each clip or screw is so you can put it back.

Step 3: Release the air box cover

  • If you have metal clips:
    • Use your fingers or the flathead screwdriver to gently pry each clip away from the cover until it pops loose.
  • If you have screws/bolts:
    • Use the 8mm socket, extension, and 1/4" ratchet to loosen and remove each screw/bolt from the top cover.
    • Place the screws/bolts in a safe spot so they don’t fall into the engine bay.
  • Do not force clips; they can snap if bent too far.

Step 4: Lift the air box cover

  • With the fasteners released, gently lift the air box cover straight up on the side away from the intake tube.
  • The cover may be hinged or held by tabs at the back. If so, tilt it up and towards the engine without disconnecting the large intake tube.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle it gently while lifting. Do not yank; check that all clips/screws are free.
  • You only need enough room to get the filter out.

Step 5: Remove the old air filter

  • Note how the old filter sits in the air box: which side faces up and how it fits into the corners.
  • Lift the old filter straight up and out using your hands. Gloves help keep them clean.
  • Look for leaves, sand, or debris in the bottom of the air box.

Step 6: Clean the air box

  • Use the shop vacuum with small nozzle to carefully vacuum out dirt and debris from the bottom of the air box.
  • Do not stick the nozzle so far in that you hit delicate sensors or wiring around the opening to the intake tube.
  • Use a clean shop towel or microfiber to wipe out any remaining dust inside the box.
  • Keeping this clean helps your new filter last longer.

Step 7: Install the new air filter

  • Compare the new filter to the old one. Shape, size, and seal should match.
  • Most filters only fit one way. Make sure any rubber sealing edge sits flat against the air box edges.
  • Place the new filter into the box, same orientation as the old one, pressing it gently down so it sits evenly in the groove all the way around.
  • No part of the filter should be twisted or sitting on top of the edge.

Step 8: Reinstall the air box cover

  • Lower the air box cover back into place, making sure any rear tabs slide into their slots and the cover sits flat on top of the new filter.
  • Make sure the large intake tube is still fully seated and not twisted.
  • If the cover rocks or doesn’t sit flat, lift it back up and double-check the filter is properly seated and not pinched.

Step 9: Secure the clips or screws

  • If you have clips:
    • Snap each clip back over the cover lip by hand. You should feel them “click” into place.
  • If you have screws/bolts:
    • Install each screw/bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
    • Use the 8mm socket, extension, and 1/4" ratchet to snug them down evenly around the cover.
    • Do not overtighten—just firm hand-tight is enough, since this is plastic.
  • Walk around the air box and gently tug the cover. It should not lift or gap anywhere.

Step 10: Final checks in the engine bay

  • Look around the intake tube and air box. Make sure:
    • No tools or screws are left inside the engine bay.
    • The large intake tube clamps are still in place and not disturbed.
    • All wiring connectors and hoses near the air box are still plugged in and routed correctly.
  • Lower and secure the hood.
  • Keeping the area tidy helps spot leaks or issues later.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔑 Start the engine and let it idle for a minute. Listen for any unusual whistling or hissing near the air box, which could mean the cover is not sealed properly.
  • đźš— Take a short, gentle drive. Throttle response should feel smooth and normal.
  • 🧾 No reset is needed for the engine computer after only an air filter change on this Grand Cherokee.
  • đź“… Make a note of the mileage and date so you know when it was last replaced.
