🔧 Seltos - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Seltos’ engine air filter sits inside the air box (the plastic housing connected to the intake tube). Replacing it restores proper airflow, helps fuel economy, and protects the engine from dirt.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work with the engine OFF and cool to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep tools, rags, and fingers away from the radiator fan area.
- ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the air box open (dirt can get sucked in).
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Turn the engine off and let it cool for 10–15 minutes.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the air box (large black plastic box connected to the intake tube).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air box and latches
- Use a flashlight to find the air box lid and the metal/plastic retaining clips around its edge.
- Air box = the filter’s “housing” (protective box).
Step 2: Unclip (or loosen) the air box lid
- If your air box uses clips: release them by hand; if tight, gently pry with a flat-blade screwdriver (medium).
- If your air box uses screws/bolts: remove them using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Don’t force it—plastic tabs can snap.
Step 3: Lift the air box lid enough to remove the filter
- Lift the lid upward (you usually don’t need to remove the whole lid).
- Pull the old filter straight out by hand.
- Note how it sits (the rubber edge/seal should sit flat all the way around).
Step 4: Clean the air box (lightly)
- Use the flashlight to check for leaves or heavy dirt inside the bottom of the air box.
- Wipe out loose debris with a dry, clean cloth (do not let anything fall into the intake opening).
Step 5: Install the new engine air filter
- Place the new filter into the lower air box by hand.
- Make sure the filter sits fully down and the seal is evenly seated (no corners folded).
- A pinched seal can let dirt bypass the filter.
Step 6: Close and secure the air box
- Lower the air box lid back into position.
- Re-latch the clips by hand, or reinstall the fasteners using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet until snug.
- If you loosened an intake hose clamp, snug it using a flat-blade screwdriver (medium).
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
- Listen for any whistling/hissing (can mean the lid isn’t sealed).
- Re-check the air box clips/fasteners visually to confirm everything is fully closed.
