🔧 CX-30 - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your CX-30’s engine air filter cleans the air going into the engine. Replacing it helps maintain smooth performance and good fuel economy, especially if you drive in dusty conditions.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of moving parts; engine must be OFF.
  • ⚠️ Do not drop anything into the air intake tube/airbox.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel
  • Flashlight
  • Small flathead screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool if it was running.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and find the air box

  • Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the air filter box (a black plastic box connected to a large intake tube).

Step 2: Unclip the air box cover

  • Release the retaining clips around the air box cover by hand.
  • If a clip is stubborn, gently pry it with a small flathead screwdriver.
  • Don’t force it; clips should pop free.

Step 3: Lift the cover and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box cover just enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the intake tube).
  • Pull the old filter straight out with your hands.
  • Use a flashlight to check the air box for leaves or dirt.

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface

  • Wipe the inside edge (where the filter seals) using a clean shop towel.
  • Do not let debris fall deeper into the intake path.

Step 5: Install the new filter correctly

  • Install the new engine air filter into the air box by hand.
  • Make sure it sits flat and fully seated in the groove all the way around.
  • If the filter has an “UP” marking, keep that side facing up.

Step 6: Close the air box and secure all clips

  • Lower the air box cover into place by hand.
  • Snap all retaining clips back on by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the cover is evenly closed (no gaps).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 20-30 seconds.
  • Listen for whistling/hissing (a sign the air box isn’t sealed).
  • Re-check that every clip is fully latched.
