🔧 Outback - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Outback’s engine air filter sits in the air box in the engine bay. Replacing it keeps dirt out of the engine and helps maintain fuel economy and smooth performance.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Work with the engine OFF and cool to avoid burns.
  • 🧼 Don’t let dirt or leaves fall into the air box or intake tube.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flat-blade screwdriver (medium)
  • Clean shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • đźš— Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🧯 Turn the engine OFF and remove the key fob from the vehicle area.
  • 🧽 Have a clean towel ready to wipe the air box sealing surface.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air box

  • Open the hood.
  • Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air box on the passenger-side area of the engine bay, connected to a large intake tube.

Step 2: Release the air box clips

  • Find the metal retaining clips that hold the air box lid to the lower half.
  • Flip each clip open by hand; if one is stubborn, gently help it with a flat-blade screwdriver (medium).
  • Tip: Don’t pry hard—clips can bend.

Step 3: Open the air box lid

  • Lift the air box lid enough to access the filter.
  • If the intake tube limits movement, lift the lid slowly and don’t force it.

Step 4: Remove the old filter

  • Pull the old filter straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to look inside the lower air box for leaves or heavy dirt.
  • Wipe the sealing edge with a clean shop towel.

Step 5: Install the new filter (correct direction)

  • Slide the new filter into the air box the same way the old one came out.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and fully down in the tray with no corners folded.
  • Tip: A crooked filter can let dust bypass.

Step 6: Close the air box and latch the clips

  • Lower the air box lid so it mates evenly all the way around.
  • Snap all retaining clips closed by hand.
  • Do a quick “tug test” on the lid to confirm it’s secure.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔎 Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds; listen for hissing (a sign the air box isn’t sealed).
  • 🧼 Recheck that all clips are fully latched and the lid seam is even.
  • đź“… Consider writing the date/mileage on the filter frame with a marker for next time.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$85 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
