🔧 Highlander - Engine Air Filter Replacement

You’ll be replacing the engine air filter inside the black plastic air box in the engine bay. This helps your engine breathe clean air, improves performance, and can help fuel economy.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15–25 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Turn the engine off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle before starting.
  • 🧯 Let the engine cool for at least 10–15 minutes so you don’t burn your hands.
  • 🧤 Keep fingers and tools away from the cooling fan; it can turn on automatically even when the engine is off.
  • 🚭 Do not smoke or use open flames near the engine bay.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🧰 10mm socket
  • 🧰 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🧰 3" extension (1/4" drive)
  • 🧰 Flathead screwdriver (medium size)
  • 🧰 Work light or flashlight
  • 🧰 Clean shop rag or microfiber cloth
  • 🧤 Mechanic gloves
  • 😎 Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 📦 Engine air filter (panel type, for 3.5L V6) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park the Highlander on level ground, shift to Park (P), and set the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Turn the engine off and open the hood using the interior hood release, then the safety latch at the front of the hood.
  • 💡 Use the hood prop rod to secure the hood fully open.
  • 📦 Make sure your new air filter matches the size and shape of the old one before installation.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Open the hood and stand in front of the vehicle.
  • The engine air filter box is the large black plastic box on the driver’s side of the engine bay, with a big plastic hose going to the engine.
  • Use the work light or flashlight to clearly see the clips and bolts around the box.

Step 2: Release the air box clips

  • On the air box cover, you’ll see several metal clips along the sides.
  • Use your hands or a flathead screwdriver to gently pry and unhook each clip. They swing away from the lid.
  • Push straight out on clips, don’t twist hard.

Step 3: Loosen any air box bolts (if equipped)

  • Some versions have one or two small bolts holding the lid.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove any 10mm bolts from the air box lid.
  • Set the bolts aside in a safe place so they don’t fall into the engine bay.
  • There is no specific torque spec here; when reinstalling later, tighten just until snug, not very tight.

Step 4: Open the air box

  • Once the clips and possible bolts are undone, gently lift the air box lid.
  • The back side of the lid is connected to the intake tube, so lift the front and side first and tilt it upward.
  • Do not force the lid; wiggle gently if stuck.

Step 5: Remove the old air filter

  • With the lid lifted, you’ll see the old rectangular air filter inside the lower half of the box.
  • Grab the filter by its edges and lift it straight up and out using your hands.
  • Pay attention to how the filter is oriented (which side faces up and which side toward the engine).

Step 6: Clean the air box

  • Use the clean shop rag or microfiber cloth to wipe out any loose leaves, dust, or debris from the bottom of the air box.
  • Do not use water, cleaners, or compressed air inside the box—just wipe gently.
  • Keep debris from falling down the intake tube.

Step 7: Install the new air filter

  • Take the new air filter and compare it to the old one to confirm size and shape match.
  • Place the new filter into the lower half of the air box, with the rubber or plastic sealing edge sitting flat all the way around.
  • Make sure the filter sits fully down in its groove and is not tilted or folded.
  • Edges must seal all the way around.

Step 8: Refit the air box lid

  • Lower the air box lid back into place, making sure the back edge lines up with the lower half and the intake tube is not twisted.
  • Check that the lid sits flat all around the new filter. If it rocks or won’t sit flat, the filter may be mis-seated—adjust it and try again.

Step 9: Reattach clips and bolts

  • Hook each metal clip back onto the lid by pressing them in until they snap over the lid edge.
  • If your air box had bolts, use the 10mm socket, 3" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to reinstall them.
  • Tighten bolts just until snug with light hand pressure. Do not overtighten, as it’s only plastic.

Step 10: Final check under the hood

  • Look around the air box and intake hose to confirm everything is fully seated and there are no gaps.
  • Make sure no tools, rags, or packaging are left in the engine bay.
  • Remove the hood prop and close the hood securely.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔑 Start the engine and let it idle for a minute. Listen for any unusual hissing sounds near the air box (which could indicate a gap or loose lid).
  • 🚗 Gently rev the engine once or twice from inside the vehicle. It should sound normal, with no whistling or loud suction noises from the air box.
  • 📅 Consider noting the mileage and date of the air filter change so you know when to replace it next time.
