🔧 Escape - Engine Air Filter Replacement

You’ll be replacing the engine air filter in your Escape’s airbox under the hood. This keeps the engine breathing clean air and helps fuel economy and performance.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot parts.
  • 🛑 Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🛑 Keep fingers, tools, and clothing away from the radiator fan; it can start even with the engine off on some cars.
  • 🛑 You do not need to disconnect the battery for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🧰 8mm socket
  • 🧰 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🧰 1/4" drive 3" extension
  • 🧰 Flathead screwdriver (4-6 mm blade)
  • 🧰 Work light or flashlight
  • 🧰 Mechanic gloves
  • 🧰 Safety glasses
  • 🧰 Clean shop towel or microfiber cloth

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔩 Engine air filter element (1.5L EcoBoost) - Qty: 1
  • 🔩 Mass airflow sensor-safe cleaner (optional) - Qty: 1
  • 🔩 Disposable nitrile gloves - Qty: 1 box

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Escape on a flat surface, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn off the engine and remove the key or switch off the ignition fully.
  • Open the hood using the interior hood release, then the safety catch at the front.
  • Use the hood prop rod to secure the hood if your Escape doesn’t have hood struts.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • The air filter box (airbox) is a black plastic box on the driver’s side of the engine bay, with a large hose (intake tube) running from it toward the engine.
  • Use your work light or flashlight to see the top and sides clearly.
  • Look for a rectangular box with clips and a hose

Step 2: Identify clips and screws on the airbox lid

  • On your Escape, the airbox lid is held by metal clips and may have one or more screws on the edges.
  • Use your flashlight to find any metal clips on the front and sides of the lid.
  • Look for small bolts (usually 8mm) at the corners of the lid.

Step 3: Release the airbox clips

  • Use your fingers or a flathead screwdriver to gently pry and flip open the metal clips holding the lid.
  • Open all visible clips around the lid edge.
  • Don’t bend clips too far; they can snap

Step 4: Remove any lid screws (if equipped)

  • Attach the 8mm socket to your 1/4" drive ratchet with the 3" extension.
  • Use the ratchet and 8mm socket to loosen and remove any small bolts along the lid edge.
  • Set the bolts aside in a safe spot so they don’t fall into the engine bay.

Step 5: Loosen the intake hose clamp (if needed)

  • The large hose going from the airbox lid to the engine may have a clamp where it attaches to the lid.
  • Use the 8mm socket or the flathead screwdriver to loosen this clamp just enough so the hose can move.
  • Do not remove the clamp completely

Step 6: Lift and tilt the airbox lid

  • Hold the intake hose with one hand and gently lift the airbox lid with the other.
  • You may need to slide the lid backward or sideways to free its locating tabs at the back.
  • Do not pull hard on any attached wires or hoses; just move the lid enough to access the filter.

Step 7: Remove the old air filter

  • Note how the old filter sits in the airbox (direction, orientation, and how the rubber seal sits in the groove).
  • Lift the old filter straight up and out with your hands.
  • If there is a lot of dust or leaves, do not let debris fall into the air duct leading to the engine.

Step 8: Clean the airbox interior

  • Use a clean shop towel or microfiber cloth to gently wipe out dust and leaves from the bottom of the airbox.
  • Do not use water or household cleaners inside the airbox.
  • If you use mass airflow sensor-safe cleaner, only spray the sensor following the product instructions, and let it dry completely before reassembly.
  • Keep debris out of the engine-side opening

Step 9: Install the new air filter

  • Take the new filter and match its shape to the old one.
  • Place the new filter into the airbox with the rubber sealing edge sitting evenly in the airbox groove all the way around.
  • Make sure there are no gaps; the filter should sit flat and snug.

Step 10: Refit the airbox lid

  • Lower the airbox lid back into place, making sure any rear tabs slide into their slots on the bottom half.
  • Push the lid down evenly so it presses firmly against the new filter’s rubber seal.
  • If lid rocks, filter may not be seated right

Step 11: Tighten hose clamp and reinstall screws

  • Use the 8mm socket and ratchet to snug the intake hose clamp where it meets the airbox lid.
  • Torque to 3-4 Nm (2-3 ft-lbs) — just snug; do not overtighten or you can strip the clamp.
  • Reinstall any 8mm bolts you removed from the lid using the 8mm socket and ratchet.
  • Torque to 5-7 Nm (4-5 ft-lbs) — firm but not overly tight.

Step 12: Close the clips and final check

  • Snap all the metal clips back onto the lid, ensuring they fully latch.
  • Gently tug on the lid to make sure it does not move and there are no visible gaps.
  • Double-check the intake hose is fully seated and the clamp is snug.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for a minute; listen for any whistling or hissing air sounds near the airbox. If you hear any, recheck the lid and hose clamp.
  • Take a short test drive; acceleration should feel smooth and normal.
  • No warning lights should appear. If a Check Engine light comes on after the job, recheck that the airbox is fully closed and all hoses and sensors are connected tightly.
  • Plan to replace the engine air filter about every 15,000–20,000 km in dusty conditions like yours, or per your owner’s manual.
