🔧 Highlander - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Highlander’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores airflow, helps performance, and protects the engine from wear.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the engine OFF and let it cool a few minutes before working under the hood.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the radiator fan area (it can run unexpectedly on some vehicles).
- ⚠️ Do not use compressed air to “clean” the filter in place—dirt can get into the intake.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Make sure the area around the air box is clean so dirt doesn’t fall inside.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter housing
- Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air filter box in the engine bay.
- It will have metal retaining clips around the edge and a large intake tube attached.
Step 2: Unclip the air box cover
- Put on nitrile gloves for grip and cleanliness.
- Release the metal clips by hand (they flip off the tabs).
- Tip: Unclip one side at a time.
Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter
- Lift the air box cover enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the intake tube).
- Pull the filter straight out.
- Use a flashlight to check for leaves or debris inside the lower air box.
Step 4: Clean the housing sealing surface
- With nitrile gloves on, remove any loose debris you can see.
- Do not let dirt drop down into the intake opening.
Step 5: Install the new engine air filter
- Insert the new filter into the lower air box.
- Make sure it sits flat and fully in the groove all the way around.
- Match the filter orientation to the old one (same direction it came out).
Step 6: Close and re-latch the air box
- Lower the air box cover straight down so it doesn’t pinch the filter.
- Re-engage all the clips by hand until they snap into place.
- Use a flashlight to confirm the cover is evenly seated (no gaps).
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
- Listen for any hissing/whistling (a sign the air box isn’t sealed).
- Re-check that all clips are fully latched.
