šŸ”§ Prius - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter keeps dirt out of your Prius’s engine and helps it breathe correctly. A clogged filter can reduce fuel economy and performance, so swapping it on schedule is an easy, high-value DIY job.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the car OFF and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
  • āš ļø Let the engine bay cool if you recently drove.
  • āš ļø Do not touch orange high-voltage cables or connectors.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and make sure the car is fully OFF.
  • Open the hood and support it with the hood prop rod.
  • Locate the air filter box (black plastic box) near the engine; it has metal clips.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air filter housing

  • Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a flashlight to see the air filter box clearly.
  • Unclip the metal retaining clips on the air filter box by hand. (A ā€œclipā€ is a spring metal latch that snaps on/off.)
  • Lift the top half of the air box up slightly to create space to remove the filter. Don’t force it—lift gently.

Step 2: Remove the old filter

  • Pull the old air filter straight out by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to look inside the lower air box for leaves or dirt.

Step 3: Clean the air box sealing surface

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose dust/debris from the lower air box.
  • Wipe the flat sealing edge where the filter sits so it seals well.
  • Do not drop debris into the intake opening. Wipe lightly, don’t scrape.

Step 4: Install the new filter

  • Insert the new filter into the lower air box by hand.
  • Make sure it sits fully flat and the rubber edge is evenly seated all the way around.
  • Match the filter orientation to the old one (pleats and frame direction).

Step 5: Close and latch the air box

  • Lower the top half of the air box back into position by hand.
  • Snap all metal clips back on by hand—verify each clip is fully latched.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm there’s no gap around the air box seam.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start your Prius and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling near the air box (can indicate it’s not clipped fully).
  • Recheck the clips and the air box seam if anything sounds unusual.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$105 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
