šŸ”§ Forester - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Forester’s engine air filter sits in the air box in the engine bay. Replacing it helps the engine breathe properly and can improve performance and fuel economy if the old filter is dirty.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work with the engine OFF and cool to avoid burns.
  • āš ļø Keep dirt/leaves from falling into the intake when the air box is open.
  • āš ļø Don’t pull on wiring near the intake. The MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow sensor) measures incoming air and is usually mounted on/near the intake tube—avoid bumping it.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Flathead screwdriver

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • šŸ…æļø Park on level ground and turn the engine off.
  • 🧊 Let the engine bay cool for a few minutes if you just drove.
  • šŸ”¦ Have your new filter ready and keep the air box area clean.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and locate the air box

  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • Use a flashlight to find the air filter box (air box)—it’s the black plastic box connected to the intake tube.

Step 2: Unclip the air box cover

  • Use your hands to release the metal/plastic retaining clips around the air box cover.
  • If a clip is stubborn, gently help it with a flathead screwdriver (don’t pry hard—just a small nudge).
  • Tip: Don’t force the cover upward.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box cover just enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the whole cover).
  • Pull the old filter straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to check for leaves/dirt inside the lower air box. If you see loose debris, remove it carefully by hand with nitrile gloves.

Step 4: Install the new filter correctly

  • Compare the new filter to the old one to confirm same shape and size.
  • Install the new filter into the lower air box in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter’s rubber edge sits flat all the way around (no gaps or folds).

Step 5: Close the air box and secure the clips

  • Lower the air box cover back into place.
  • Refasten all the retaining clips by hand (use the flathead screwdriver only if needed to guide a clip into position).
  • Do a quick visual check that the cover seam is even all the way around.

āœ… After Repair

  • šŸ” Start the engine and let it idle for 15-30 seconds. Listen for any hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box isn’t fully sealed.
  • 🧼 Recheck the clips and the air box seam if anything sounds unusual.
  • šŸ—“ļø Note the mileage/date so you know when it was last replaced.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$105 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
