🔧 Altima - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter helps your engine breathe properly and can improve drivability and fuel economy. On your Altima, the filter sits inside the engine air box and is a quick swap with basic hand tools.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • 🧯 Keep fingers clear of moving parts; engine must be OFF.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
  • 🧼 Do not let dirt fall into the intake tube/air box.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the engine off.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool for 10-15 minutes if it was just running.
  • 🔦 Open the hood and set your flashlight ready so you can see the air box clearly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and locate the air box

  • Open the hood and secure it.
  • Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air box connected to the intake tube (the large plastic duct going toward the engine).

Step 2: Unclip the air box cover

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Release the metal retaining clips around the air box cover by hand.
  • If a clip is tight, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver (a flathead is a straight-blade screwdriver used to pry lightly). Don’t force plastic parts.

Step 3: Lift the cover and remove the old filter

  • Carefully lift the air box cover just enough to access the filter.
  • Remove the old filter straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to check how the filter sits (note the direction and how the seal fits the air box).

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface

  • Use a shop towel to wipe out loose dust/debris inside the bottom of the air box.
  • Do not push dirt into the intake opening. Wipe outward, not inward.

Step 5: Install the new engine air filter

  • Install the new filter in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the rubber seal sits flat all the way around (no corners folded).

Step 6: Close the air box and re-secure the clips

  • Lower the air box cover back into place.
  • Re-latch all clips by hand. Use the small flathead screwdriver only if needed to guide a stubborn clip.
  • Do a quick visual check that the cover is evenly seated on all sides.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔍 Start the engine and let it idle for 10-15 seconds; listen for any hissing/air leak noise near the air box.
  • 🧰 If you hear a leak, shut the engine off and re-check that the filter is fully seated and clips are fully latched.
  • 🗓️ Consider checking the filter every 12 months or sooner in dusty conditions.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$95 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
