šŸ”§ Ascent - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your A/C and heat don’t use this filter—this one is for the engine. Replacing the engine air filter helps your engine breathe properly and can improve performance and fuel economy if the old filter is dirty.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Let the engine cool so you don’t burn yourself on hot parts.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers clear when snapping airbox clips back on.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Acent on level ground and turn the engine off.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • Have your new filter unboxed and ready to avoid dropping debris into the airbox.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Use flashlight to find the black plastic air cleaner box near the front/side of the engine bay with a large intake tube attached.

Step 2: Unclip the airbox cover

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Release the metal retaining clips around the airbox by hand.
  • If it resists, wiggle the clip—don’t force.

Step 3: Open the airbox and remove the old filter

  • Lift the airbox cover up just enough to pull the filter out (you usually don’t need to remove any hoses).
  • Remove the old filter straight out and keep it level so dirt doesn’t fall into the lower box.

Step 4: Clean the airbox sealing surface

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose dust/leaves from the lower airbox.
  • Wipe the sealing edge where the filter sits so it seals tightly.
  • Don’t let debris drop into the intake tube.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower airbox in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and fully inside the rectangular groove all the way around (no corners folded).

Step 6: Close the airbox and secure the clips

  • Lower the airbox cover back into position, keeping the filter from shifting.
  • Snap all the retaining clips back on by hand.
  • Give the airbox a gentle tug to confirm it’s fully latched.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds.
  • Listen for any loud hissing/whistling (a sign the airbox isn’t sealed).
  • Re-check that every clip is fully latched and the cover is sitting evenly.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$130 (parts + labor)

You Save: $45-$95 by doing it yourself!
