🔧 XT4 - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your XT4’s engine air filter sits in the airbox and traps dust before it reaches the turbo and engine. Replacing it restores airflow and helps performance and fuel economy, especially in dusty areas.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the engine OFF and let it cool for 10 minutes before working near the turbo/intake.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers and tools clear of the cooling fan area (it can turn on unexpectedly).
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the airbox open (dirt can get in).
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Open the hood and set the hood prop (if equipped).
  • Take a quick photo of the airbox area so hoses/clips go back the same way.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Look for the black plastic airbox near the front/side of the engine bay with a large intake tube connected to it.
  • Use safety glasses and work gloves before reaching in.

Step 2: Release the airbox cover (two common versions)

  • If your airbox uses metal clips: use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry each clip open. Don’t snap the clips.
  • If your airbox uses screws/bolts: use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension to loosen the fasteners around the airbox lid.

Step 3: Open the airbox and remove the old filter

  • Lift the airbox lid straight up (you usually don’t need to fully remove the intake tube).
  • Pull the filter straight out with your hands (use work gloves).
  • Quick check: note how the filter sits (which edge faces up) so the new one matches.

Step 4: Clean the airbox sealing surface

  • Use your safety glasses and wipe the airbox rim with a clean rag (not a tool), so the new filter seals well.
  • Do not let dirt fall into the intake opening.

Step 5: Install the new engine air filter

  • Set the new filter into the airbox in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits flat all the way around (no corners folded).

Step 6: Close and secure the airbox

  • Press the airbox lid down evenly by hand.
  • If clips: close each clip by hand; if tight, use a flathead screwdriver gently to help guide it closed.
  • If screws/bolts: tighten using the 8mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension until snug. Don’t overtighten plastic.

Step 7: Final check

  • Visually confirm the airbox lid sits evenly and the intake tube connection looks fully seated.
  • Remove tools from the engine bay.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Listen for whistling/hissing (a sign the airbox isn’t sealed).
  • If a check engine light comes on shortly after: re-check that the airbox lid is fully closed and the intake tube connection is secure.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
