🔧 Land Cruiser - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Land Cruiser’s engine air filter traps dust and debris before it reaches the engine. Replacing it restores airflow, helps fuel economy, and prevents dirt from damaging the engine.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2–0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the engine off and let it cool a few minutes before working near the engine bay.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt/leaves from falling into the intake tube or air box.
  • ⚠️ Don’t pull on wiring near the intake (sensors are delicate).
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Shop light

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧼 Wipe loose dirt off the air box area so debris doesn’t fall inside.
  • 🔦 Identify the air box (the plastic housing that holds the air filter) on the engine bay.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and locate the air box

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a shop light to clearly see the air box and its clips/screws.

Step 2: Release the air box cover (two common styles)

  • Clip style: Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry up the metal/plastic retaining clips, then flip them open.
  • Bolt/screw style: Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to loosen/remove the fasteners holding the lid.
  • Go slow—don’t crack the plastic.

Step 3: Lift the air box lid and remove the old filter

  • Use your flathead screwdriver only if needed to gently help lift the lid edge (don’t force it).
  • Lift the lid just enough to slide the filter out.
  • Pull the old filter straight out and keep the dirty side facing up to avoid dropping dirt inside.

Step 4: Clean the sealing area (quickly)

  • Use the shop light to inspect inside the air box.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver to lift out any large leaves/debris you can grab (don’t scrape the sealing surface).
  • Don’t wipe dirt deeper into the intake.

Step 5: Install the new air filter correctly

  • Use the shop light to confirm the filter sits fully flat in the air box.
  • Install the new filter with the rubber seal seated evenly all the way around.
  • If the filter has an airflow arrow, point it toward the engine (toward the intake tube).

Step 6: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the lid and make sure it’s fully seated.
  • Clip style: Use a flathead screwdriver to help snap the clips back over the tabs (light pressure only).
  • Bolt/screw style: Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to tighten the fasteners snugly (do not over-tighten the plastic).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds. Listen for any hissing/whistling (a sign the air box isn’t sealed).
  • ✅ If a check engine light appears right after, re-check that the air box lid is fully closed and nothing is unplugged.
  • ✅ Recheck the clips/fasteners after a short drive to confirm they stayed secure.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $20-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $40-$75 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
