🔧 Avalon - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Avalon’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it helps maintain smooth performance and fuel economy, and it’s one of the easiest maintenance items you can do at home.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the radiator fans; they can turn on unexpectedly.

- Clean microfiber towel

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Avalon on level ground and shift to Park.
- Set the parking brake and open the hood.
- Let the engine cool for at least 15 minutes if it was just running.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter housing
- Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air box on the engine bay (it’s connected to the large intake tube that runs toward the engine).
Step 2: Unclip the air box cover
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Release the metal retaining clips on the air box by hand. (They flip up and away.)
- If it resists, wiggle the clip—don’t force it.
Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter
- Lift the air box cover just enough to access the filter.
- Remove the old filter straight up and out.
- Use a flashlight to check for leaves/dirt inside the lower air box.
Step 4: Clean the housing sealing surface
- Wipe the inside edge (where the filter seals) using a clean microfiber towel.
- Do not drop debris into the intake opening.
Step 5: Install the new engine air filter
- Place the new filter into the lower air box the same way the old one came out.
- Make sure it sits flat all the way around (no corners folded).
- A crooked filter can let dirt past the seal.
Step 6: Close the air box and secure the clips
- Lower the air box cover back into place.
- Snap all retaining clips back down by hand until they fully latch.
- Do a quick visual check that the cover is evenly seated.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds.
- Listen for any hissing/whistling (this can mean the air box isn’t sealed).
- Recheck the clips and the air box seam if anything sounds off.
