🔧 4Runner - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter helps your A4Runner breathe properly, which can improve drivability and fuel economy and protect the engine from dirt. On your 4Runner, the filter sits inside the air box in the engine bay and is one of the easiest maintenance items to DIY.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot parts.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the radiator fan area; it can start unexpectedly on some vehicles.
  • ⚠️ Do not drop anything into the air intake snorkel (the tube leading to the air box).
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towel
  • Flathead screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your 4Runner on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the cabin area.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool if it was recently running.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Open the hood and find the black plastic air box on the passenger side of the engine bay.
  • The air box is the rectangular plastic housing connected to the intake tube.

Step 2: Unclip the air box lid

  • Release the metal retaining clips around the edge of the air box lid by hand.
  • If a clip is stubborn, gently pry it with a flathead screwdriver (don’t force it).
  • Tip: Keep a hand on the lid so it doesn’t pop up.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid up just enough to access the filter.
  • Pull the old filter straight out.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe loose dust from the inside of the air box.

Step 4: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box tray.
  • Make sure it sits flat and the edges seal all the way around.
  • Tip: If it won’t sit flat, it’s not aligned.

Step 5: Close and latch the air box

  • Lower the air box lid back into position.
  • Re-engage all the retaining clips by hand until they fully snap into place.
  • Do a quick visual check that the lid is evenly seated on all sides.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your 4Runner and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed.
  • Take a short drive and confirm normal throttle response.
