🔧 Crosstrek - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of your engine. Replacing it restores airflow, can improve throttle response, and helps protect the engine from wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work with the engine off and cool (avoid hot parts).
  • 🛑 Keep fingers clear of the radiator fans (they can turn on unexpectedly).
  • 🛑 Do not run the engine with the filter removed (dirt can enter).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shut the engine off.
  • Open the hood and secure it with the prop rod.
  • No battery disconnect is needed for this job.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air box near the front/left side of the engine bay (it’s connected to the intake tube).

Step 2: Unclip the air box cover

  • Use nitrile gloves and release the metal retaining clips around the air box cover by hand.
  • If tight, push clip down then out.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box cover up just enough to access the filter (no need to remove the intake tube).
  • Pull the old filter straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to look inside the lower air box for leaves/debris.

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose dirt and clean the rim where the filter seals.
  • Do not drop dirt down the intake opening.

Step 5: Install the new filter (correct orientation)

  • Insert the new filter into the lower air box the same way the old one came out.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat all the way around and isn’t pinched or folded.
  • A bad seal can trigger a rough idle.

Step 6: Close the air box and re-latch the clips

  • Lower the air box cover into place, aligning the edges.
  • Re-engage each clip by hand until fully latched.
  • Do a quick tug-check: the cover should not lift at the corners.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling (could mean the air box isn’t sealed).
  • If you see a check engine light afterward, re-check that the filter is fully seated and the air box clips are fully latched.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
