šŸ”§ Pathfinder - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Pathfinder’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it helps maintain power, fuel economy, and can prevent premature engine wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • āš ļø Keep dirt/leaves from falling into the intake tube or air box.
  • āš ļø Do not touch the MAF sensor (mass air flow sensor); it’s a delicate airflow sensor in the intake tube.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Pathfinder on level ground and turn the engine off.
  • Open the hood and let the engine bay cool for a few minutes.
  • Have a flashlight ready so you can see the air box clips clearly.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to find the black plastic air box on the passenger side of the engine bay.
  • The air box is connected to a large intake tube going toward the engine.

Step 2: Release the air box cover

  • Unclip the metal retaining clips on the air box cover by hand (use nitrile gloves for grip).
  • If your air box uses screws or a clamp instead of clips, use a Phillips screwdriver or 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet to loosen them.
  • Don’t unplug sensors unless you must.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid up enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the whole lid).
  • Pull the old filter straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to check the bottom of the air box for leaves or heavy dirt; wipe it out with a clean rag (don’t let debris fall into the intake tube).

Step 4: Install the new air filter

  • Insert the new filter into the air box in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter’s rubber seal sits flat all the way around (no corners folded).

Step 5: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the air box lid fully so it seats evenly.
  • Reinstall/retighten fasteners using the Phillips screwdriver or 10mm socket with 1/4" ratchet (snug, not over-tight).
  • Snap the metal clips back into place by hand.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start your Pathfinder and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Listen for any loud hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed.
  • If a check engine light appears, re-check that the air box is fully closed and nothing was left loose in the intake area.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

You Save: $45-$135 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
