🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter housing
- Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air box connected to the large intake tube.
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
Step 2: Open the air box
- Look for the air box fasteners around the lid.
- If your air box uses metal clips, release them by hand (use a trim clip tool only if a clip is stubborn).
- If your air box uses screws/bolts, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver or 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet and 3" extension.
- Lift the lid straight up enough to remove the filter. Don’t yank on attached hoses.
Step 3: Remove the old filter
- Pull the old filter out by hand.
- Use a flashlight to check the bottom of the air box for leaves or sand.
Step 4: Clean the air box sealing area
- Wipe the inside edge where the filter seals using a clean shop towel (use your nitrile gloves).
- Make sure nothing can fall into the intake tube.
Step 5: Install the new filter
- Set the new filter into the air box by hand.
- Make sure it sits flat and fully seated all the way around the edges.
- If the filter has an “UP” or airflow marking, match it to the way the old one was installed.
Step 6: Close and secure the air box
- Lower the lid into place by hand, making sure it isn’t pinching the filter.
- Reinstall fasteners:
- Re-latch clips by hand.
- Reinstall screws/bolts using a Phillips screwdriver or 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet.
- Double-check that the intake tube is fully seated and nothing was left loose.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for 20-30 seconds.
- ✅ Listen for a hissing/whistling sound (can mean the air box lid isn’t sealed).
- ✅ If you use the maintenance reminder, reset it: Vehicle Information Display > Settings > Maintenance > Air Filter > Reset
