🔧 Altima - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Altima’s engine air filter sits in the air box and keeps dust/debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores airflow and helps fuel economy and performance, especially in dusty areas.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the radiator fan area.
- ⚠️ Don’t drop dirt into the open air box or intake tube.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required.

- Engine air filter - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and turn the engine off.
- Open the hood and let the engine bay cool down.
- Have a shop towel ready so you can wipe the air box if needed.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter housing
- Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air box (air filter housing) near the front/side of the engine bay.
- Look for metal clips around the seam where the air box lid meets the bottom half.
Step 2: Unclip the air box lid
- Release the metal clips by hand.
- If a clip is tight, gently pry it with a flat-blade screwdriver (a flat screwdriver has a straight, flat tip used for prying or turning slotted screws).
Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter
- Lift the air box lid just enough to access the filter. Don’t force it or pull on hoses.
- Pull the old air filter straight out.
- Tip: Note how the old filter sits.
Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface
- Use a shop towel to wipe out loose dirt from the bottom half of the air box.
- Make sure the rubber sealing edge area is clean so the new filter can seal.
Step 5: Install the new air filter
- Place the new filter into the air box in the same orientation as the old one.
- Make sure it sits flat all the way around and isn’t pinched.
Step 6: Close the air box and re-latch the clips
- Lower the air box lid fully so the seam is even.
- Snap all clips back into place by hand (use the flat-blade screwdriver only if you need gentle help).
- Visually check that the lid is fully seated on every side.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Altima and let it idle for 30 seconds.
- Listen for air leaks (a loud hissing/whistling can mean the air box isn’t sealed).
- Re-check that all clips are fully latched.
