🔧 CX-9 - Engine Air Filter Replacement

On your CX-9, the engine air filter sits inside the air filter box in the engine bay. Replacing it restores proper airflow, helps fuel economy, and can prevent dirt from getting into the turbo/engine.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work with the engine OFF and cool to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Don’t start the engine with the air box open (unfiltered air can be sucked in).
  • ⚠️ Avoid pulling on wiring near the air box; it’s easy to damage connectors.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flathead screwdriver (small)
  • Flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🧯 Set the parking brake and open the hood.
  • 🧼 Have a clean towel ready so no dirt falls into the air box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air filter box connected to the large intake tube.
  • Look for metal clips around the edge of the box lid.

Step 2: Unclip the air box lid

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Release the retaining clips by hand; if one is stubborn, gently pry it with a flathead screwdriver (small).
  • Don’t force the clip—wiggle it.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the lid just enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the whole lid).
  • Pull the filter straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to check the bottom of the air box for leaves/dirt.

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing area

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe the air box edges where the filter seals.
  • Do not drop debris into the intake opening. Wipe outward, not inward.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Insert the new filter into the lower half of the air box.
  • Make sure it sits fully flat and the gasket edge is evenly seated all the way around.
  • If the filter has an “UP” mark, use the flashlight to confirm it’s oriented correctly.

Step 6: Close the air box and re-latch the clips

  • Lower the air box lid carefully so it doesn’t pinch the filter.
  • Snap all clips back into place by hand.
  • If needed, use the flathead screwdriver (small) to help press a clip fully closed (light pressure only).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Double-check every clip is fully latched and the lid sits evenly.
  • ✅ Start the engine and listen for any loud hissing/whistling (a sign the lid isn’t sealed).
  • ✅ If you hear an intake leak, shut it off and re-seat the filter and lid.
