🔧 Renegade - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Renegade’s engine air filter sits inside the airbox (the black plastic box in the engine bay). Replacing it helps airflow, fuel economy, and keeps dirt from wearing the engine.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Let the engine cool first; the engine bay can be hot.
- 🧯 Keep fingers clear of the radiator fan area; it can turn on unexpectedly.
- 🛑 Do not start the engine with the airbox open (it can pull in dirt).

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

- Safety glasses

- Torx T25 screwdriver

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to neutral, and set the parking brake.
- 🔦 Open the hood and locate the airbox (black plastic box connected to the intake tube).
- 🧼 Have a shop towel ready so you can wipe dust from the airbox rim.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the airbox and access the cover
- Use a flashlight to find the airbox and the cover fasteners.
- Your airbox cover may be held by metal clips or by Torx screws (some covers use both).
Step 2: Release the airbox cover fasteners
- If you see metal clips, pop them open using a flathead screwdriver (gently pry under the clip). Don’t force it—clips can snap.
- If you see Torx screws, loosen/remove them using a Torx T25 screwdriver and place them somewhere safe.
Step 3: Lift the airbox cover
- Use your hands to lift the airbox cover straight up or hinge it open (depending on how it’s designed).
- Do not yank on any wiring or hoses.
- Airbox = the filter housing box.
Step 4: Remove the old air filter
- Pull the filter straight out by hand.
- Use a shop towel to wipe the sealing surface (the flat rim where the filter sits).
- Do not let dirt fall down into the intake opening.
Step 5: Install the new air filter
- Match the new filter to the old one to confirm the shape and size.
- Set the new filter into the airbox, making sure it sits fully flat and the edge seal is seated all the way around.
- If it’s cocked, the cover won’t seal.
Step 6: Reinstall and secure the airbox cover
- Close the airbox cover carefully, making sure it aligns with the lower half.
- Re-latch the metal clips by hand (use a flathead screwdriver only if needed to guide them).
- Reinstall/retighten Torx screws using a Torx T25 screwdriver until snug. Do not overtighten (plastic can strip).
âś… After Repair
- 🔎 Do a quick visual check that the airbox cover is fully closed on all sides.
- 👂 Start the engine and listen for any hissing/whistling (can mean the cover isn’t sealed).
- 🧼 Recheck the area for any leftover tools or screws before closing the hood.
